Fold Over Waistband Sweatpant: A Detail That Has To Lie Flat

A fold over waistband is a nice detail and a genuine construction problem. It is a wide band that folds down onto itself, which means it is double the thickness of a normal waistband at exactly the point where the garment has to bend, and it has to lie flat rather than curling, stay folded rather than springing open, and hold the pant up without rolling. Those three pull against each other, and getting them together is a pattern and fabric question.

The fabric choice matters more here than on a standard waistband. Too stiff and the fold will not sit, too soft and it will flop and roll, and on a fleece the bulk doubles the problem. We would rather test two cloths for the band than pick one and discover the problem in bulk.

• Band width and how far it folds, set as measurements
• Fabric for the band, chosen for how it folds rather than by look
• Whether there is elastic inside, and how much
• How the fold is secured so it does not spring open
• Rise, front and back, since a fold over band changes where the waist sits
• Leg shape and how it hangs from a softer waist
• Shrinkage, which changes the band circumference
• Wash testing, because a fold over band is the first thing to lose shape

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The fold is the first and it is the detail that fails. A band that curls rather than lying flat, or that springs open as soon as it is worn, looks like a fault rather than a design, and it happens because the cloth is wrong for the fold or because the fold has not been secured. We choose the band cloth for how it folds rather than for how it looks on a swatch, set the width and the fold depth as measurements, secure the fold, and check it on the body rather than flat.

Staying up is the second. A fold over band is soft by nature, and if there is not enough hold in it the pant will slide, which is the most common complaint on this waistband. We specify whether there is elastic inside and how much, set the band circumference per size rather than scaling one number, and test the waist through wearing and washing rather than only inspecting it new.

Bulk, shrinkage and shape are the third. A folded band is double thickness at the waist, which means more bulk to manage at the seam and more tendency to roll, so we develop it on the actual cloth. Shrinkage changes the circumference, which turns a band that fits into one that is loose, so we test before cutting and compensate. The leg has to hang from a softer waist than usual, so we check the pant hanging on the body rather than on a table.
