Artist Merch Crew Sweatshirt: Licence First, Then The Garment

Artist and music merchandise is a licensing question before it is a garment question, and it is worth being blunt about it. An artist's name and likeness belong to them or to whoever they have assigned the rights to, and producing merchandise without a licence is infringement. We ask for the paperwork before we sample, not after, because the cost of getting it wrong is a seized shipment rather than a remake.

Once the rights are settled, the garment is a boxy crew and the print is the product. Artist merch usually means a large graphic on the chest or back, and on a boxy body the placement has to be set by size rather than fixed, or the graphic will sit too high on a small and too low on a large. That is the detail that separates merch that looks designed from merch that looks printed.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The licence is the first and there is no substitute for it. artist names, likenesses and logos are protected, and producing merch without paperwork risks seizure and a claim against both of us. If it cannot be shown, the honest alternative is the same garment with your own artwork, which we can develop and which leaves you in a better position.

The print is the second and it is what the customer is buying. Large graphics on fleece crack when the ink sits on a moving fabric rather than moving with it, and curing has to be controlled for the weight. Merch also gets washed more than most clothing, which makes this worse. We choose the method for the cloth, control the cure, and test wash fastness and stretch on printed samples rather than judging by eye.

Placement and the neck rib are the third. On a boxy body a fixed placement measured from the neck puts the graphic in a different place on every size, so we scale placement by size and check it on the body. The neck rib on a merch garment takes the most handling, so it is specified by composition and recovery rather than by colour and tested over repeated washing, because rib that flares is how a sweatshirt stops looking new.
