Ultimate Soft Hooded Jacket: Softness Has To Survive Washing

When a garment is sold on how it feels, the question is not how soft it is when it leaves the factory, it is how soft it is after it has been washed twenty times. Those are different questions, and a lot of fabric that feels extraordinary new feels ordinary quite quickly. Softness in a pile fabric comes from the fibre, the finish and the pile height working together, and the finish is the part that washes out first.

So we would rather talk about what is behind the hand than match a swatch. A fabric can be made to feel softer in the finishing than it really is, and that softness is borrowed. The honest version costs a little more and lasts. If softness is the selling point, it is worth specifying properly rather than taking the softest sample on the table.

What Has To Be Specified

• Fibre and pile height, which is where real softness comes from
• Finish, and whether it will wash out
• Fabric weight, since a jacket needs body as well as softness
• Hood construction and how it sits with the extra bulk
• Zip, pockets and trims, which are what hands touch
• Lining or not, and how it affects the hand
• Pile direction and shading, controlled at cutting
• Wash testing for hand, not only for shrinkage

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The hand is the first and it is the whole point of the garment, so it is worth testing rather than feeling. Softness that comes from a finish will wash away, and softness that comes from the fibre and the pile will not, which is why we test the hand after repeated washing rather than judging a swatch. We also check that the hand is consistent between batches, because a reorder that feels different is its own complaint even if nothing else changed.

Pile behaviour is the second. Pile flattens under pressure and mats where it is rubbed, and it shades differently depending on which way it lies, so panels cut in different directions can look like different colours on one garment. On a jacket, which is heavier and handled more than a sweatshirt, this is worse. We control pile direction at cutting, test washing and rubbing on the actual cloth, and pack so the pile is not crushed, because arriving flat is the most common complaint about soft pile fabrics.

The hood, zip and shrinkage are the third. A hood on a bulky soft fabric has weight and is attached along the neckline only, so it pulls back unless it is balanced, and with more bulk the problem is bigger. The zip has to run through that bulk without waving, so the placket is stabilised and the top finished with a garage or facing. Shrinkage changes the fit and the length of a jacket more than it changes a sweatshirt, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern before cutting.
