Wide Leg Sweatpant: The Hem Decides Whether It Looks Expensive

A wide leg sweatpant is one of the few garments where the fabric does most of the work. If the cloth is too light, a wide leg will not hang, it will cling and swing, and it will read as cheap no matter how well it is sewn. If it is heavy enough, the same pattern falls straight from the hip and looks like it cost more than it did. That is why we would rather push you up a weight class than save a little on the cloth.

The hem is the second thing and it is more specific than it sounds. A wide leg has a lot of fabric at the bottom, and the hem has to be wide enough to let it fall and narrow enough not to look like a skirt, which is a measurement rather than a judgement. It also has to be level all the way round, which is checked on the body rather than on a table, because a hem that is level flat is often not level standing.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Drape is the first and it is mostly a fabric decision. A wide leg has to fall under its own weight, and light fleece will not do that, so the weight range matters more here than on almost any other bottom. We test the drape on the actual cloth before committing, and we would tell you to go heavier rather than compromise, because a wide leg that clings cannot be fixed afterwards by better sewing.

The hem and the twist are the second. The hem width has to be set as a measurement, because a few centimetres either way changes the whole look, and it has to be level when the garment is standing on a body rather than lying flat, which are different things. A wide leg also twists if it is not cut to the grain, and the wider the leg the more obvious the twist, so we control that at cutting and check the leg hanging rather than pressed.

Shrinkage, the waistband and surface are the third. Shrinkage shortens a long wide leg and changes where it falls, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern before cutting, and we check after the care cycle. The waistband carries more weight than on a slim leg, so the elastic is specified rather than assumed and the drawcord eyelets reinforced. On the surface, a wide leg rubs against itself more than a slim one, so we test pilling and rubbing on the actual cloth and check batch to batch shade.
