Funnel Neck Fleece Zip Through: Two Hard Details In One Garment

This garment combines the two details that cause the most trouble in fleece: a funnel neck, which has to stand and still fit over the head, and a full length zip, which is a stiff line in a soft fabric. Separately each is manageable. Together they interact, because the zip is what lets the neck be high and still wearable, so the neck height, the zip length and the opening are one decision rather than three.

That is actually the good news about this style. A funnel neck on a zip through can be taller and closer than on a pullover, because the zip does the work of getting it on. The risk is that the zip then has to run through the neck cleanly, which is the hardest part of the garment to sew and the part that looks worst when it is done badly.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The zip is the first and it decides whether the garment looks finished. A full length zip in fleece will wave unless the placket is stabilised, and it will look worse here than on a hoodie because the eye follows the zip straight up into the neck. The top of the zip is the hardest part: it has to terminate cleanly into the funnel, it needs a garage or a facing so the puller does not rub the chin, and the two sides have to meet level at the neck. We stabilise the placket, specify the zip and its finish, and check the garment both done up and open, on the body rather than flat.

The neck is the second. Standing up needs height and structure, getting on needs an opening, and the zip is what makes both possible, so the three are set together rather than separately. Bulk is the specific problem in fleece: a funnel neck drafted as though the fabric were flat will be tight and will sit forward. We draft for the cloth thickness, check the neck by putting the garment on, and check it after the care cycle rather than only off the machine, since a neck that collapses after washing is a common failure.

Rib, shrinkage and surface are the third. Cuff and hem rib have to recover after washing or the garment loses its shape, so we specify the rib rather than matching a colour and test recovery on repeated cycles. Shrinkage tightens a neck and distorts a zip, both of which are unfixable afterwards, so we test on the actual cloth before cutting and compensate the pattern. On the surface, the brushed face is where pilling shows first and it is most visible on the chest.
