Plush Funnel Neck Sweatshirt: A Neck That Has To Stand Up

A funnel neck is the hardest neckline to get right on a sweatshirt, because it has to do two things that pull in opposite directions. It has to stand up on its own, which needs structure and height, and it has to fit over the head, which needs an opening that is big enough. If you solve the first and ignore the second, you get a garment that is difficult to put on, and that is a return waiting to happen even if it looks right on a hanger.

On plush there is a third problem, which is bulk. A funnel neck in a thick pile fabric has to be drafted for the thickness of the cloth rather than for a flat pattern, or the neck will be tight, the seam bulky, and the whole thing will sit forward rather than standing. This is a pattern job and we would rather spend the sampling time there than on the body.

• Bulk at the neck seam, drafted for the cloth thickness

• Neck facing or lining, and how it is finished
• Plush pile direction through the neck
• Shoulder and body, since a high neck changes the proportion
• Wash testing, because a neck loses its shape in washing

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The neck is the first and it is where the sampling time belongs. Height, circumference and opening have to be set as measurements and then checked by putting the garment on, because a neck that measures correctly can still be difficult to get into, and a customer who struggles once will not wear it again. On plush the bulk has to be drafted for rather than pressed away, or the neck sits forward and heavy rather than standing. We develop the neck on the actual cloth, manage the seam bulk, and check it on the body at both ends of the size range.

Neck shape after washing is the second. A funnel neck that stands beautifully new and collapses after the first wash is a common failure, and it comes from the structure being in the pressing rather than in the construction. We specify any interlining or support rather than assuming, and we check the neck after the care cycle rather than only off the machine, because that is where the difference shows.

Pile, shrinkage and surface are the third. Pile direction through the neck affects how it looks and how it lies, so we control it at cutting. Shrinkage tightens a neck opening, which makes a snug neck genuinely unwearable, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate before cutting. Plush also mats where it is handled, and the neck is the most handled part of the garment, so we test rubbing and pack so the pile is protected.
