Licensed Character Mini Short: Rights Before Sampling

A short carrying a character name is a rights question first and a garment question second, and we would rather say that at the start than quote for something that cannot be shipped. Characters belong to whoever owns them, and producing merchandise without a licence risks seizure and a claim, for both of us. So the first thing we ask for is proof that you hold the licence or written authorisation from the holder.

Where that is in place, the garment is a mini short and the print is the product. A small garment with a character graphic has one specific problem: the artwork has to be placed so it is not cut by the hem, the waistband or the leg opening, which on a mini short leaves very little room. That is a placement job and it is worth solving at sampling rather than in bulk.

A note on this one: This title names a licensed character. We will not produce branded or character merchandise without documented proof of licence or written authorisation from the rights holder. The garment notes below assume that documentation is in place.

• Proof of licence, before sampling rather than after
• Artwork placement, on a garment with very little free space
• Print method chosen for the fabric and for washing
• Colour approval against the licensor's reference
• Waistband, which does all the holding on a short
• Leg opening and rise, checked seated
• Neck and trim placement, so nothing scratches
• Wash testing, since licensed merch is washed often

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The licence comes first and there is no way round it. Character artwork is protected, and producing it without paperwork risks the shipment being seized and a claim against both parties. If you cannot show the rights, the honest alternative is the same short with your own artwork, which we can develop and which leaves you in a stronger position commercially.

Placement is the second and it is the specific difficulty of a mini short. There is very little fabric that is not hem, waistband or leg opening, so artwork has to be placed deliberately and scaled by size, or it will be cut off on a small or sit oddly on a large. We set placement per size, check it on the body, and approve strike-offs against the licensed reference rather than against a screen.

The print and the short itself are the third. Prints crack when the ink sits on a fabric that moves rather than moving with it, and merch gets washed often, so we choose the method for the cloth and test wash fastness and stretch on printed samples. On the garment, the waistband does all the holding and the leg opening and rise are checked seated rather than standing, because that is the difference between a short that works and one that does not.
