Micro Sweatshort: Every Millimetre Shows

A micro short is the most demanding garment in this whole group, and the reason is simple: there is very little fabric, so there is nothing to absorb an error. A centimetre of difference in the rise changes how it sits. A centimetre on the leg opening changes whether it grips or gapes. On a longer garment those are tolerances, and here they are the product.

That means the specification has to be written down rather than implied. We would want the rise front and back, the inseam, the leg opening and the waistband width all in centimetres, and we would want them checked seated as well as standing, because a short this short is judged in motion far more than on a hanger.

• Leg opening, which has to sit without gripping or gaping
• Waistband width and hold, since there is no weight below to help
• Inseam, in centimetres
• Gusset or flat felled crotch, and how it is finished
• Fabric weight and recovery, since a micro short needs some hold
• Shrinkage, which on this garment is everything
• Wash testing, because a short this size shows change immediately

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The rise and the leg opening are the first and they are checked together. A rise that works standing can gape at the back seated, and a leg opening that sits flat can grip once the wearer moves. On a garment this small both are immediately visible. We set both as measurements, test seated and moving rather than only standing, and grade them by size rather than scaling one number across the range.

Shrinkage is the second and it is more damaging here than anywhere else. A few percent of shrinkage on a micro short changes the inseam and the rise measurably, which on a garment with so little fabric is the difference between a good fit and an unwearable one. We test on the actual cloth before bulk cutting, compensate the pattern rather than hoping, and check the finished short after the care cycle rather than only off the machine.

The waistband and the crotch are the third. With no weight below to help hold the garment up, the band does all the work, so its width and elastic are specified rather than assumed and it is finished so it does not roll. The crotch seam on a short takes real strain and is the seam most likely to fail, so we specify how it is constructed and test it, because a split there is unrepairable.
