Plush Fitted Zip Through: A Close Fit In A Thick Fabric

A fitted garment in plush is asking a thick, springy fabric to do something it does not naturally do, which is lie close to the body without bulking at every seam. It can be done, but not by cutting a normal pattern in a thicker cloth. The seams have to be chosen and engineered for the bulk, the zip has to be set into stabilised fabric, and the fit has to be tested on the body rather than on a measurement chart.

The other thing to be honest about is that a fitted plush garment is warmer and bulkier than it looks in a photograph. That is not a fault, but it is the kind of thing worth saying on a product page, because a customer expecting a light layer and receiving a substantial one will return it.

What Has To Be Specified

• Seam types chosen for bulk rather than by default
• Placket stabilisation, so the zip does not wave
• Fit tested on the body rather than from measurements alone
• Fabric weight and pile height, since plush has real thickness
• Neck and collar finish, which is closest to the face
• Pile direction, controlled at cutting
• Shrinkage, which changes a fitted garment faster
• Wash testing, because plush pile is the fragile part

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Bulk at the seams is the first and it is what makes a fitted plush garment look cheap. Every seam is thicker than it would be in a flat fleece, and on a close fitting garment the eye goes straight to the seams. We choose seam types for the cloth rather than defaulting, engineer the bulk rather than pressing it flat, and check the garment on the body rather than on a hanger.

The zip is the second. A full length zip in a thick cloth will wave unless the placket is stabilised, and on a fitted garment the wave is more visible because there is no ease to hide it. The top has to finish cleanly at the neck with a garage or a facing. We stabilise the placket, specify the zip for the cloth, and check the garment done up and open, on the body rather than flat.

Pile, shrinkage and fit are the third. Pile shades differently by direction, so we control it at cutting, and it mats where it is handled, which on a fitted garment is everywhere, so we test rubbing and pack so the pile is protected. Shrinkage changes a close fit measurably, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate before cutting. The fit itself is developed on the body and checked at the smallest and largest sizes rather than only on the sample size.
