Low Rise Bootleg Sweatpant: Why The Rise Is The Whole Garment

A low rise pant is the hardest rise to get right, and it is worth saying why. A high rise is held up by the waist, which is narrow. A mid rise sits on the hip. A low rise sits below the hip, where the body is wider and where there is nothing to grip, which means the garment is being held up by the waistband alone and it will roll, slip or gap if the band and the rise are not cut to work together.

Add a bootleg to that and you have two problems at once: the rise has to stay put, and the flare has to hang from a point that moves with the wearer rather than with the pattern. These are the two things we would spend the sampling time on, in that order, because a pant that fits beautifully at the hip and falls out of the flare is not worth shipping.

What Has To Be Specified

• Rise measurement, front and back, set in centimetres
• Waistband width and construction, which is what holds a low rise up
• Where the flare starts, relative to the knee rather than to the hem
• Leg twist, which is more visible on a flared leg
• Fabric weight and recovery, since a low rise has nothing to hold it
• Seat and crotch shape, which decides whether it gaps when sitting
• Shrinkage, which changes the rise faster than any other measurement
• Fit testing on the body, seated and standing

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The rise is the first and it is where most of the sampling time should go. A low rise that is too shallow gaps at the back when the wearer sits, which is both uncomfortable and the most common reason this style is returned. A rise that is too deep is no longer a low rise. We set the front and back rise as measurements, test them seated as well as standing, and grade the rise through the size range rather than holding it constant, because a fixed rise on a larger size sits in a different place on the body.

The waistband is the second and it carries the whole garment. With no hip to sit on, the band does the work, so its width and its elastic are specified rather than assumed, and it is finished so it does not roll, which is the specific failure of a low rise band. If there is a drawcord it takes real load and the eyelets have to be reinforced. We test the waist through wearing and washing rather than only inspecting it new.

The flare and the twist are the third. A flare has to be cut so it falls from the knee rather than being pushed out by the calf, and the leg has to be cut to the grain or it will twist, which on a flared shape is obvious rather than subtle. Shrinkage moves both the rise and where the flare starts, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate before cutting, and we check the leg hanging on the body rather than flat on a table.
