Capri Fleece Sweatpant: The Length Everyone Argues About

Capri is one of those words that everyone uses and nobody defines. It means anything from below the knee to just above the ankle depending on who is saying it, and on a fleece pant that difference is large enough that two people can approve the same sample and be thinking about different garments. So the first thing we do is ask for a measurement: the inseam in centimetres, and how it should relate to the wearer's height or to the size chart.

The second thing worth knowing is that a cropped leg in fleece behaves differently from a full length one. A full length leg has enough weight to pull itself straight. A cropped leg ends where the calf is widest, which means the hem has to be cut to sit at that point without gripping, and it is the reason a cropped pant that looks fine standing up can look wrong the moment someone sits down.

What Has To Be Specified

• Inseam in centimetres, which is the only definition worth working from
• Where the hem lands relative to the calf, checked seated as well as standing
• Hem width and treatment, so it does not grip or flare
• Leg taper, and where the leg is widest
• Fabric weight, because a cropped leg still needs to hang
• Waistband and rise, which carries the garment
• Shrinkage, which changes a cropped length proportionally more
• Wash testing, since a cropped leg is bought for where it ends

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Length is the first and it is a measurement problem before it is a making problem. Because the whole point of the garment is where it ends, and because fleece shrinks, a pant that is approved at the right length can arrive a size shorter after washing. We test shrinkage on the actual cloth before bulk cutting, compensate the pattern, and check the finished garment after the care cycle rather than only off the machine. We also grade the inseam by size rather than holding one number across the range, since the same inseam on a taller size lands somewhere else entirely.

Where the hem sits is the second. A cropped fleece leg ends around the widest part of the calf, and if the hem is cut too narrow it grips and the leg rides up, and if it is too wide it flares and looks unfinished. Neither is visible on a flat table, so we check it on the body, seated as well as standing, because a cropped pant is worn sitting down as much as standing up.

Waistband and rise are the third. A cropped pant puts more of the visual weight on the waist and the hip, so a waistband that rolls or a rise that is too shallow is more obvious than it would be on a full length pant. We specify the elastic rather than leaving it to the line, reinforce drawcord eyelets, and test the garment through wearing and washing cycles rather than only inspecting it new.
