Boxy Fleece Hoodie: Getting The Shoulders Right

Boxy is not the same as oversized, and the difference is worth being clear about because it changes the pattern. Oversized means a bigger version of a normal shape. Boxy means a wider body with a shorter length and a flatter shoulder line, and the shoulder is what makes it: a boxy hoodie that has a normal shoulder slope reads as a hoodie that is too big, while one with the shoulder dropped and squared reads as designed.

The hem is the other half. Because the body is shorter, the hem sits at a point where it is visible and where it has to relate to whatever is worn underneath, so it needs to be level, it needs to sit flat against the body rather than flipping up, and it needs to have been cut with the front and back balanced rather than just shortened from a longer pattern.

• Shoulder line and slope, which is what makes it boxy rather than big
• Body width relative to length, set as a ratio rather than by feel
• Hem line, level and balanced front to back
• Sleeve shape, since a wide body needs a sleeve that reads with it
• Fabric weight, because a boxy body needs body in the cloth
• Rib at the hem and cuff, and its recovery
• Hood balance, so it sits back rather than pulling
• Shrinkage, which changes the proportion of a short wide body fastest

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Proportion is the first risk. A boxy garment is a relationship between width and length, and if the two drift independently during grading the result is a small size that looks boxy and a large size that just looks long. We set the width and the length as measurements in the tech pack rather than grading from a single sample size, and we approve the proportion at both ends of the size range rather than only in the middle.

Shrinkage is the second and it bites harder here than on a longer garment, because a short wide body changing by a few percent changes its proportion visibly. Fleece shrinks differently in length and in width, so a boxy hoodie that shrinks more in length becomes a cropped boxy hoodie, which is a different product. We test shrinkage on the actual cloth before bulk cutting and compensate the pattern, and we check garments after the care cycle rather than only off the machine.

The shoulder and the hem are the third. A dropped shoulder has to be sewn so the seam sits where it was designed to rather than rolling forward, which is a construction question as much as a pattern one, and the hem has to be level and lie flat rather than flipping up, which is checked on a body rather than on a table. Rib at the hem and cuff is specified by composition and recovery, because rib that loses its return turns a deliberate shape into a shapeless one after a few washes.
