Plush Classic Mini Short: Comfortable Without Sagging

A plush short has one job beyond being soft, which is keeping its shape while being worn. Plush is thick and springy, which is lovely to wear and awkward to construct, because there is more material to fit into every seam and more tendency for the fabric to push back rather than sit. On a short, where the seams are short and every measurement is visible, that shows quickly.

The waistband is where it shows first. A short is held up entirely by the waist, and plush bulk at the waist tends to make a narrow band roll. So the band width and its construction are decisions rather than defaults, and this is the part of the garment we would spend the sampling time on before anything else.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The waistband is the first and it is where plush shorts fail. With nothing below the waist to hold them up, and with plush bulk pushing against the band, a narrow band will roll and a soft one will fold. We set the width and the construction in the tech pack rather than leaving it to the line, reinforce the drawcord eyelets where there is a tie, and test the waist through wearing and washing rather than only inspecting it new.

Pile behaviour is the second. Plush flattens under pressure and mats where it is rubbed, and on a short the inner thigh is exactly where that happens. It also shades differently depending on which way the pile lies, so panels cut in different directions can look like different colours on one garment. We control pile direction at cutting, test washing and rubbing on the actual cloth, and pack so the pile is not crushed, because arriving flat is the most common complaint about plush.

Fit, shrinkage and leg opening are the third. A short is worn sitting down, so the rise has to work seated rather than only standing, and the leg opening has to sit without gripping. Both are checked on the body rather than flat. Shrinkage changes the inseam and the rise measurably on a garment this small, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern before cutting, and we check the finished short after the care cycle.
