Active Fleece Zip Through Hoodie: Warmth Without Drag

Fleece is warm and it is bulky, and for an active garment those two are in tension: the warmth is the point, and the bulk is what gets in the way. That is why an active fleece hoodie is usually made in a lighter weight than a lounge one and why the seams matter more, because a bulky seam in a garment worn moving is felt rather than seen.

The zip earns its place here in a way it does not on a lounge hoodie. Being able to open the front is the difference between a garment that works when the effort increases and one that has to be taken off, so the zip is a functional component rather than a styling detail, and it gets specified and tested as one.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Weight and bulk are the first and they are a trade rather than a specification. Heavier is warmer and gets in the way, lighter moves better and warms less, and the right answer depends on what the garment is for. We would rather ask than assume, and we test the drape and the feel on the actual cloth rather than on a swatch card.

The zip and the seams are the second. A zip on an active garment is opened and closed constantly and while the body is moving, so it is tested under load rather than flat, and the placket is stabilised so it does not wave. Seams are chosen so they stretch with the body and so they are not felt, because a bulky seam under a rucksack strap or against a mat is noticed immediately.

Recovery, washing and abrasion are the third. An active garment that bags at the elbow after an hour is not doing its job, so we test recovery rather than stretch. It is washed far more often than loungewear, so we test to more cycles, check the hand survives, and test pilling and abrasion on the actual cloth, because active garments rub more than anything else in a wardrobe.
