Fleece Wide Leg Sweatpant: Weight Is What Makes It Hang

The single most important decision on a wide leg fleece pant is the weight of the cloth, and it is worth saying so plainly because it is the thing most often compromised on. A wide leg has to fall under its own weight. Light fleece will not do that, it clings and swings, and the garment reads as cheap no matter how well it has been sewn. Going up a weight class costs a little and changes the garment completely.

After weight, the hem. A wide leg has a lot of fabric at the bottom, and the hem has to be wide enough to let it fall and narrow enough not to look like a skirt. That is a measurement, it is set in the tech pack, and it is checked standing on a body rather than lying flat, because a hem that is level on a table is often not level when worn.

What Has To Be Specified

• Cloth weight, which decides whether the leg hangs or clings
• Hem width, set in centimetres rather than by eye
• How the leg falls from the hip, cut rather than forced
• Hem levelness, checked standing
• Waistband, which carries more weight than on a slim leg
• Leg twist, which is more visible the wider the leg
• Shrinkage, which shortens a long wide leg visibly
• Wash testing, since drape changes after washing

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

Drape is the first and it is mostly decided before a needle is threaded. We test the drape on the actual cloth rather than trusting the weight number, and we would rather tell you to go heavier than ship a wide leg that clings, because that cannot be fixed by better making.

The hem and the twist are the second. The hem width is set as a measurement because a few centimetres changes the whole look, and it is checked standing on a body rather than flat. A wide leg also twists if it is not cut to the grain, and the wider the leg the more obvious that is, so we control it at cutting and check the leg hanging rather than pressed.

Shrinkage, the waistband and the surface are the third. Shrinkage shortens a long wide leg and changes where it falls, so we test on the actual cloth and compensate the pattern before cutting, and check after the care cycle. The waistband carries more weight than on a slim leg, so its elastic is specified and the drawcord eyelets reinforced. A wide leg rubs against itself more than a slim one, so we test pilling and check batch to batch shade.
