Fleece Contour Zip Through: Shaped Seams On A Soft Fabric

A contour zip through is shaped by its seams rather than by its pattern alone, which means the seams are doing two jobs at once: they are holding the garment together and they are creating the shape. That is a lot to ask of a seam in fleece, which is soft and moves, and it is why contour styles pucker more than plain ones. Every shaped seam is a place where two slightly different lengths have to be joined.

Add a zip and the difficulty increases, because the zip is a straight stiff line running through a garment whose whole point is that it is not straight. The placket has to be stabilised, the shaped seams have to meet it cleanly, and the result has to be checked on the body rather than flat, because a contour garment looks completely different on a hanger than it does worn.

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The shaped seams are the first and they are what makes or breaks this garment. Joining two edges of slightly different length is normal in garment making and it is what causes pucker, but on a contour style there are more of those joins and each one is visible because the seam is the design. We specify how each is sewn rather than leaving it to the line, and check the garment on the body rather than on a hanger, because shaping that looks right flat often pulls when worn.

The zip is the second. A straight stiff line through a garment whose point is that it is not straight will wave unless the placket is stabilised, and the shaped seams have to meet it cleanly or there will be a visible step where they do. We stabilise the placket, specify the zip for the cloth, finish the top with a garage or facing, and check the garment done up and open, on the body rather than flat.

Recovery, shrinkage and distortion are the third. A contour garment depends on the fabric holding a shape, so recovery matters more than stretch and we test it rather than assuming it from the fibre. Shaped seams have more directions to shrink in than straight ones, so shrinkage distorts them and the garment with them, which we test on the actual cloth and compensate for before cutting. We check after the care cycle rather than only off the machine.
