Fleece Micro Short: Small Garment, No Tolerance

A micro short in fleece is the garment in this group with the least tolerance for error. There is almost no fabric, so there is nothing to absorb a mistake, and the three measurements that decide it, the rise, the leg opening and the waist, are all in a range where a centimetre matters. That is not a reason to avoid the style, it is a reason to specify it properly rather than to approve it from a photograph.

The other thing worth saying is that fleece is bulkier than the jersey most micro shorts are made in, which means the seams are thicker relative to the size of the garment and the waistband has more material to hold. That is a construction question rather than a problem, and it is why the specification matters more here than on a longer short.

• Waistband width and hold, since there is no weight below to help
• Inseam, in centimetres, graded by size
• Crotch seam construction, which takes the most strain

• Wash testing, since the garment shows change immediately

Where This Style Goes Wrong In Production

The three measurements are the first and they are checked together. A rise that works standing can gape seated, a leg opening that sits flat can grip in motion, and a waistband that holds standing can roll when bending. On a garment this small all three are visible immediately. We set them in centimetres, test seated and moving rather than standing, and grade them by size rather than scaling one number.

Shrinkage is the second and it is more damaging here than on any longer garment. A few percent changes the inseam and the rise measurably, and on a micro short that is the difference between a good fit and one that does not work. We test on the actual cloth before bulk cutting, compensate the pattern rather than hoping, and check the finished short after the care cycle rather than only off the machine.

Seams and the crotch are the third. Fleece is bulkier than the jersey usually used for this, so seam bulk is more visible on a small garment and the seam type has to be chosen rather than defaulted. The crotch takes the most strain of any seam and is the one that fails, so we specify how it is constructed and test it, because a split there cannot be repaired.
