The Fern midi dress from Rixo in a wine floral trail jacquard, based on the house's Clarice and adapted with lace cap sleeves finished with a soft tie, a V neck, a bias cut body, an empire waist, an adjustable waist tie and a concealed zip at the side, listed at 255 GBP with only one of its four sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with the length, because it is the number that does not fit its own description. The chart publishes 133 centimetres, and it publishes it on all four sizes, and it gives no measurement point for it. It is worth then doing the arithmetic, because the page supplies what is needed. The model is 170 centimetres tall and wears a UK 8. A dress length can be taken from the shoulder, from the neck seam or from the waist, and this run has met pages that say which. This one does not. It is worth then setting out why that matters. Taken from the shoulder, 133 centimetres on a 170 centimetre wearer puts the hem within a few centimetres of the ground. That is not a midi. It is worth then being fair about what follows, because there are two readings and the page allows both. Either the measurement point is not the shoulder, which is likely, or the word midi is wrong. The page does not let a reader tell which, and that is the finding. It is worth then turning to the sleeve, which is the second column that does not move. It is published at twelve centimetres on a UK 8, and twelve on a 10, and on a 12, and on a 14. It is worth then being fair here too, because there is a reason. These are cap sleeves. A cap sleeve is short by definition and does not need much grading. It is worth then reading the chest, because that is the only column on this page that moves at all. Doubled, it runs 88 to 100 centimetres around, or about 34 and a half to 39 and a half inches. Against bodies of 31 to 37 inches, the ease runs 3.7 inches at a UK 8 down to 2.4 at a UK 14. It is worth then holding the description's own words against that, because they pull the other way. The bullets say unlined for a non-restrictive feel, and they say signature bias cut. It is worth then being fair about the bias, because it is a real mechanism. A cloth cut on the bias does give, and viscose satin gives more than most. It is worth then adding what is missing, which is that no figure for it is published anywhere on the page, so nobody can say how much of the three and a half inches is cloth and how much is room. The reference is the Fern dress. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable dresses on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth and lace development to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

| UK 10 | 46 cm | 12 cm | 133 cm |

The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the dress laid down, doubling to 88, 92, 96 and 100 cm around, or 34.65 to 39.37 in. Against bodies of roughly 31 to 37 in, the ease at the chest runs 3.7, 3.2, 2.8 and 2.4 in, falling by about 0.43 in at every step. The sleeve is 12 cm and the total length 133 cm on every size, so neither is graded, and no measurement point is given for the length. Taken from the shoulder, 133 cm on the stated 170 cm model would put the hem close to the ground, which does not match the word midi, so either the measurement point is not the shoulder or the length word is wrong. No underbust, waist, hip or shoulder is published, and no figure is given for how much the bias cut gives. Our proposal below grades all three columns and states the measurement point for the length.

Occasions and Styling
Suits occasion and evening wear. A bias cut jacquard in a deep wine works with heels and a sequin bag, and the same dress comes down to ballet flats for daytime.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes three measurements for all four sizes, grades the chest evenly, splits its composition into a main fabric and a lace, names its cloth, its cut, its sleeves, its neck, its waist, its hem and its closure, states that it is unlined and why, gives its provenance within the house's own range and names its country of manufacture. It gives no cloth weight, no bias angle, no waist, no hip, no shoulder, no underbust, no neck depth, no lace width, no sleeve opening circumference, no tie length, no zip length, no measurement point for its length, no shrinkage figure, no certification and no unit on its model reference, its sleeve and its total length are not graded at all, and only one of its four sizes is in stock. Three things follow: a length that cannot be both 133 centimetres and midi, a fit claim the page cannot quantify, and a house habit of dropping the unit from its model heights.
One hundred and thirty three, and that is the first thing, and it is worth saying what the page does not say about it before doing anything with the number. It gives no measurement point. A dress length can be taken from the shoulder, from the neck seam or from the waist, and this run has met pages that say which. This one does not. It is worth then doing the arithmetic, because the page does supply what is needed: the model is given as 170 and wears a UK 8. It is worth then setting out what the shoulder reading gives. A shoulder point on a 170 centimetre woman sits about 139 centimetres above the ground, so a hem 133 centimetres below it lands about six centimetres up. That is a floor length dress. It is worth then being fair about the two readings this allows, because there are two and the page permits both. Either the number is not taken from the shoulder, which is likely, or the word midi in the bullets and in the product's own name is wrong. The page gives the reader no way to choose between them, and a length that cannot be checked is a length that has not really been published. It is worth then noting the second thing in the same column, which is that 133 appears four times. A UK 8 and a UK 14 get the same length. It is worth then turning to the sleeve and being fair about it, because there is a reason and this run should give it. The sleeve is twelve centimetres on all four sizes. These are cap sleeves. A cap sleeve covers the shoulder joint and stops, and it genuinely does not need much grading between sizes. So the frozen column is defensible here in a way it was not on the balloon sleeves this run read in the last two batches, where the sleeve was the whole point of the garment and still did not move. It is worth then reading the chest, which is the only column on this page that moves, and it moves evenly: two centimetres at every step, giving an ease of 3.7 down to 2.4 inches.
Non-restrictive, and that is the second thing, and it is worth putting the three statements the page makes about the body together, because they all point one way. The bullets say unlined for a non-restrictive feel. They say signature bias cut. And the dress measures 3.7 inches of ease at the smallest size down to 2.4 at the largest. It is worth then being fair about the bias, because it is a real mechanism and this run should not pretend otherwise. Cloth cut across the grain does give, and viscose satin gives more than most. So part of those two and a half inches at the largest size is not room at all, it is the cloth going where the body pushes it. It is worth then asking what that leaves, which is the actual problem. No figure for it is published. Not a stretch percentage, not a relaxed and stretched pair of measurements, and this run has now asked for that on a jersey cardigan, a smocked dress and a merino vest, and the answer has been the same each time. It is worth then adding the second thing the page does not measure, which is the place it says the garment is shaped. The bullets say empire waist. An empire seam sits under the bust, and the measurement that governs whether it fits is the underbust. It is not published. It is worth then noting that this is the second garment from this house in two batches to describe an empire waist and publish no underbust measurement, which makes it a habit rather than an oversight. It is worth then closing on what the page does get right, which is worth saying because this run is often critical of it: the composition panel is split into two lines, main fabric at 100 per cent viscose and lace at 100 per cent polyamide, so the lace has its own fibre, and the dry clean instruction follows from that, which is the rule this run has been building and it holds here. It is worth then adding what is left over, which is short: no cloth weight on a satin jacquard, no bias angle, no zip length, no tie length on an adjustable tie, no neck depth, no lace width, no sleeve opening, and three of the four sizes sold out.
Optional upgrades include stating the measurement point for the length and grading it across the size range, resolving the length against the word midi, grading the sleeve or stating why a cap sleeve does not need it, publishing a figure for how much the bias cut gives with the relaxed and stretched chest measured, publishing the underbust on an empire waist, publishing the waist, the hip and the shoulder, giving the lace width and the sleeve opening circumference, the waist tie length, the zip length and the neck depth, quoting the cloth weight in grams per square metre and the bias angle, adding shrinkage figures and a unit to the model reference, silk, recycled polyester, printed satin and viscose crepe cloths, straight grain, bias skirt and panelled bodies, short, sleeveless and long sleeves, natural waist seams, drawstring waists and straight bodies, knee, maxi and high low lengths, half, viscose and cotton poplin linings, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
