The Cilla Shirt from Skall Studio in Green/White Check, an oversized shirt with a band collar, dropped shoulders, long ballooning sleeves and a run of mother of pearl buttons, listed at 155 GBP with all four sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with the ease, because this is the second garment from this brand in this batch and the two together do something this run has not been able to do before. The pit to pit runs 66, 68, 70 and 72 centimetres, doubling to 132 to 144 centimetres around, or 52 to 57 inches. Against bodies of 31 to 37 inches the ease runs about 21.0 inches at a size 34 down to 19.7 at a size 40. The other Skall garment in this batch, a merino jumper labelled simply oversized, sits at about 17.0 inches at its smallest. So the same brand, in the same season, uses two labels for two different amounts of looseness, and the two amounts are four inches apart, and both labels are accurate. It is worth then turning to the rate, because this is where the two garments part company in a way worth recording. The jumper grades its chest at one centimetre per size. This shirt grades at two. The same brand, the same four letter sizes, two rates, and a factor of two between them. It is worth then looking at the sleeve, which is the most interesting column on the page and the most frustrating. It runs 79.5, 81.25, 83 and 84.75 centimetres, stepping one and three quarter centimetres at every step. That is quarter-centimetre precision, finer than anything this run has measured, and it is spent on the one column the garment's design is built on, because the description's last and longest phrase is about the ballooning sleeves. It is worth then asking where that sleeve is measured from, because the answer decides what the number means. The page does not say. On a dropped shoulder shirt the sleeve could run from the shoulder seam or from the centre back neck, and the two conventions differ by ten centimetres or more. The reference is the Cilla Shirt. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable shirts on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth and check development to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the shirt laid down, doubling to 132, 136, 140 and 144 cm around, or 51.97 to 56.69 in. Against bodies of roughly 31 to 37 in, the ease at the chest runs from about 21.0 in at a size 34 down to 19.7 at a size 40, a fall of about 1.3 in across three steps, which is small because the chest grade of 2 cm is close to the 2.54 cm a size step needs. The body length grades at 1 cm per size while the sleeve grades at 1.75 cm, so the sleeves grow at nearly twice the rate of the body and the proportions change across the range. The sleeve is published to a quarter of a centimetre but carries no measurement point, and on a dropped shoulder shirt the shoulder seam and the centre back neck conventions differ by ten centimetres or more. No waist, no hip, no neck circumference, no band height, no cuff depth and no cuff circumference are published, and the check carries no width, spacing or repeat. Our proposal below grades the chest evenly, states the sleeve from a named point, and publishes the length across the sizes.

Occasions and Styling
Suits work, smart casual and weekends. A very oversized check shirt in organic cotton works buttoned over a vest or open over a tee, and the ballooning sleeves let it read as a dressed-up piece without anything else doing the work.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes three measurements for all four sizes, measures its sleeve to a quarter of a centimetre, publishes a size conversion from a numeric Danish scale to letter sizes, names its collar, its shoulders, its sleeve shape, its cuff finish and its button material, names a certification against the style number, states its care with a temperature and a drying instruction, gives a model height and the size worn and names its country of manufacture, and carries three photographs with all four sizes in stock. It gives no cloth weight, no yarn count, no waist, no hip, no neck circumference, no band height, no cuff depth or circumference, no gather ratio, no shoulder drop, no measurement point for the sleeve, no check width, spacing or repeat, no button count, size or spacing, no shrinkage figure and no indication of where the gathers sit. Three things follow: the largest chest ease in this run attached to a fit word that holds, a sleeve measured more finely than anything else in this run and attached to nothing, and the run's first real certification on a garment with no weight behind it.
Seventy nine point five, eighty one point two five, eighty three, eighty four point seven five, and that is the first thing, and it is worth noticing the quarters before anything else, because they are the interesting part. This run has been reading charts for a long while and has twice now been stopped by the same problem: a column that does not move between two sizes, and no way to tell whether the measurement genuinely did not change or whether a real half centimetre had been rounded away. A shirt two batches ago settled that question by printing halves when there were halves to print, and the zeros on its sleeve were therefore real. This shirt goes further and prints quarters. So the precision here is not decoration, it is evidence, and it is worth saying what it is evidence of. It is evidence that this brand measures carefully, and that makes what comes next harder to explain away. The sleeve is the garment. The description runs through the collar and the buttons and then spends its longest phrase on the long ballooning sleeves and the cuffs that bind them. The whole silhouette rests on how long that sleeve is and how much it is gathered. And the page measures it to a quarter of a centimetre and does not say where from. It is worth being concrete about the size of that omission. On a shirt with dropped shoulders, a sleeve measured from the shoulder seam and the same sleeve measured from the centre back neck are not two versions of one number, they are different numbers, and the gap between them is roughly ten centimetres on a body this size. So the single most precise figure on the page is also the single most ambiguous, and the run has to say which it prefers and cannot. It is worth then setting the sleeve beside the other two columns, because together they make a second point. The chest grades two centimetres per size, the body length one, and the sleeve one and three quarters. Three columns, three rates. So the shirt gets wider faster than it gets longer, and its sleeves get longer faster than its body does. Across four sizes the body grows three centimetres and the sleeves grow five and a quarter. A person who is larger is also taller, on average, so some of that is right, but the proportions of the garment are not being held constant and nothing on the page says so.
GOTS, and that is the second thing, and it is worth saying why it stands out, because this run has been asking for certification on garment after garment and has found it almost nowhere. Of everything this run has read, the certifications named have been none at all, or the ones a supplier offers to arrange. This page puts three letters against the style number. It is worth then asking what that certification does and does not tell a buyer, because the answer is the same shape as every other finding this run has made. GOTS is a claim about the fibre and the chain of custody: the cotton is organic, and it was grown and ginned and spun and sewn under an audited standard. That is a real and useful thing. What it does not tell a buyer is what the cloth feels like or how it will hang, because those are set by the weight in grams per square metre and the yarn count, and neither is on the page. So the shirt is certified organic and unspecified in every respect that decides how it wears, which is the same structure the run met on the merino jumper in this batch: merino without a micron count. It is worth then putting the two Skall garments side by side, because this is the first time the run has had two garments from one brand in one batch and the comparison is worth more than either garment alone. Both are oversized. One says oversized and measures about seventeen inches of ease; the other says very oversized and measures about twenty one. The adverb is worth four inches, and it is accurate. That is a real calibration and the run will take it. But the two also disagree on things they should not. The knit grades its chest at one centimetre per size and the woven at two, on the same size letters. And the two garments are photographed on models three centimetres apart in height, one hundred and seventy six and one hundred and seventy nine, so the same brand's own reference point moves between garments. It is worth closing on the check, because this batch completes a tally. The description says a classic light check and the shirt in the next entry says a small brown check. Two checks, two adjectives, no width, no spacing, no repeat on either. And it is worth noting what kind of adjective those are, because the run has been collecting them: subtle, small, minimal, deep. A size word attached to a quantity the page never measures.
Optional upgrades include quoting the cloth weight in grams per square metre and the yarn count, giving the check width, the spacing and the repeat, naming the measurement point for the sleeve and publishing the cuff circumference and the gather ratio, grading the body length at a rate that holds the proportion against the sleeve, publishing the neck circumference, the band height, the cuff depth and the shoulder drop, giving the button count, size and spacing, adding a shrinkage figure to the label, GOTS certified poplin, organic cotton and linen, yarn-dyed oxford, brushed organic cotton and cotton and silk, smaller, larger, windowpane and gingham checks and plain dyeing, classic, grandad and camp collars, bishop, gathered cap and straight sleeves, buttoned, single button barrel and French cuffs, corozo, tonal resin and concealed buttons, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
