Relaxed Long Sleeve Denim Shirt with a Button-Down Front, a Chest Pocket and a Soft Shirting Hand

The Carter Shirt from Citizens of Humanity in a mid and light indigo, a timeless button-up cut from soft denim shirting with an airy, breathable hand and a relaxed silhouette, listed at 280 GBP with two of four sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with the size chart, because it is the best this run has measured and it is worth being precise about why. The pit to pit runs 47, 50, 53 and 56 centimetres, so the grade is three, three and three: perfectly even, and at three centimetres it is the largest grade in this run. This run has worked out that on a scale from XS to L, where bodies grow about three inches a size, a flat measurement needs to grow by about 3.81 centimetres a size to hold the ease steady. This shirt grows by three, so it should give away about 1.92 inches across its range, and measured against bodies of roughly 31 to 40 inches it gives away exactly that. It is worth then saying the thing that makes this the useful example, because it is not the grade. The ease runs from about 6 inches down to about 4.1 inches. It never approaches zero. So the shirt loses nearly two inches of room across its range and it does not matter, because it started with six. It is worth setting that beside a dress from two batches ago that lost a similar amount and ended three inches short, because the two together settle something this run has been imprecise about. The amount of ease a garment loses is set by its grade. Whether that loss hurts is set by how much ease it had to begin with. The reference is the Carter Shirt. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable shirts on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth and wash development to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the shirt laid down, doubling to 94, 100, 106 and 112 cm around, or 37.01, 39.37, 41.73 and 44.09 in. Set against bodies of roughly 31 to 40 in across an XS to L, the ease runs from about 6 in at the smallest size to about 4.1 in at the largest, so about 1.9 in is given away across the range and the ease stays comfortably positive throughout. The bust steps exactly 3 cm at every step, which is the largest grade this run has measured, and the sleeve and the total length each step exactly 1 cm.

Occasions and Styling

Suits everyday, work and layering. A relaxed denim shirt works tucked, layered or left loose, and the weight makes it a between season piece.

Production and Quality Control

The reference publishes three measurements for all four sizes and grades every one of them, names its fit word, names the sleeve length, the button-down fastening and the chest pocket, names the cloth as a denim shirting and the wash as a mid indigo, gives a handle in three words, states its fibre, gives two care clauses including a qualified tumble instruction, states the country of manufacture, lists the construction in a bullet list and carries six photographs. It gives no cloth weight, no weave, no wash recipe, no colour fastness, no button count or size, no placket width, no pocket dimensions, no cuff opening, no shoulder width, no hem circumference, no shrinkage figure, no size conversion, no model, no certification and no style code. Three things follow: the largest and cleanest grade in this run, the ease that makes the shortfall irrelevant, and the cloth that is named and not specified.

Three, three, three, and that is the first thing, and it is worth saying what it is a record for. The pit to pit runs 47, 50, 53 and 56 centimetres, so the grade is three centimetres at every step. This run has now measured grades of 1, 1.5, 1.75, 2 and 2.25 on other garments, and three is the largest it has seen. It is worth then applying the relationship this run worked out, because it holds here too and this is the eighth garment and the fifth brand it has been checked on. On a scale from XS to L, bodies grow about three inches a size, so a flat measurement has to grow by about 3.81 centimetres a size to keep the ease steady. This one grows by three, which is 2.36 inches, so it falls short by about 0.64 inches a step, and over three steps that is about 1.92 inches given away. Against bodies of roughly 31 to 40 inches, the shirt measures 37 to 44 inches around, so the ease runs from about 6 inches down to about 4.1. That is 1.92. It is worth saying plainly that this shirt still does not grade fast enough: even the best graded garment in this run is short of the 3.81 centimetres that would hold its fit constant, and so is every other garment in this run. It is worth then turning to the other two columns, because they are the part most brands get wrong and this one does not. The sleeve runs 53, 54, 55 and 56, and the total length runs 67, 68, 69 and 70. Both step one centimetre at a time, cleanly. This run has found brand after brand that grades the chest and abandons the sleeve and the length: one brand froze its sleeve length on all three of its garments in one batch, and another froze its length at the top three sizes on all three of its garments in another batch. Here all three columns move, which makes this the cleanest chart in this run alongside a trench coat from three batches ago that graded its fifteen numbers without a single block or freeze.

Six, and then four, and that is the second thing, and it settles something this run has been imprecise about. The ease at the chest runs from about 6.01 inches at an XS down to about 4.09 inches at an L. So the shirt loses nearly two inches of room across its range, and at no point is it anywhere near tight. It is worth setting that beside a sleeveless maxi from two batches ago, which lost 4.85 inches and ended up three inches short at its largest size, and a pintuck maxi from the same batch, which lost 1.7 inches and ended two thirds of an inch short. It is worth stating the distinction, because this run has been treating ease loss as though it were the failure. It is not. The amount of ease a garment loses across its range is fixed by its grade, and almost nobody grades fast enough, so almost everybody loses some. Whether that loss costs the wearer anything depends on how much room there was to begin with. This shirt starts at six inches and ends at four, so it is a relaxed shirt on an XS and a relaxed shirt on an L, and the two feel nearly the same. The maxi started at under two inches and ended at minus three, so it was loose on a US 2 and tight on a US 10, and those are different dresses. It is worth adding that the fit word on this page is therefore verifiable, which is unusual. The bullets say relaxed silhouette. Six inches of ease is relaxed, and four inches is relaxed. This run has recorded the same word on a top where the ease ran from 5.2 inches down to 0.9, so it was relaxed on the small sizes and close on the large one. Here the word holds across the whole range, and the chart proves it. It is worth closing on the price of getting the fit right, which this garment pays and which is visible in the numbers. Holding six inches of ease at every size means the shirt is genuinely roomy at every size. A brand that wanted a closer fit would have to grade faster still, because at a closer starting ease the same 1.92 inch loss would start to bite.

Shirting, and that is the third thing, and it is worth giving the page its due before listing what it leaves out, because shirting does real work as a word. Shirting is a weight class: it means a cloth lighter than the denim used in trousers, woven for a shirt rather than a jean. So soft denim shirting tells a customer that this is denim in appearance and shirt in weight, and that is more information than most cloth descriptions in this run carry. It is worth then noting what it is not, which is a measurement. There is no weight in ounces and none in grams. It is worth setting that beside another garment in this run, because the comparison is one batch away and it is uncomfortable. A pair of jeans at 105 pounds carried a bullet reading 100% Cotton 'Smith' Denim, 13.5 oz. That is a fibre, a named cloth and a weight, and it remains the only complete cloth specification in this run. This shirt is 280 pounds, nearly three times the price, made of the same fibre, from the same family of cloth, and it gives a weight class and no weight. That is now the fourth batch in a row in which the cheaper garment specified its cloth better than the more expensive one. It is worth then taking the wash, which is half of a denim specification and is half given. The colour is Chaya Mid/Light Indigo and the description says a mid indigo wash. There is no recipe, no number of cycles, no statement of whether it is an enzyme or a stone wash, and no colour fastness. And indigo is the dye that bleeds and fades, so the wash is the part of this specification a customer lives with longest. It is worth closing on the two smaller gaps and one absence. The fastening is a button-down, and there is no button count and no button size, and on a shirt the buttons are the visible hardware. There is a chest pocket with no dimensions. And the style code field is empty. This run has now met that field in three states: filled correctly on most pages, filled with a colour code instead of a style number on one garment two batches ago, and empty here. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.

Optional upgrades include quoting the cloth weight in ounces and grams per square metre, giving the wash recipe, the number of cycles and the colour fastness, stating the sleeve measurement start point and the cuff opening, publishing the shoulder width and the hem circumference, adding the button count, button size and placket width and the pocket dimensions, grading the bust at the 3.81 cm that would hold the ease steady, adding a shrinkage figure and a wash temperature in degrees to the label, publishing a model and a size conversion, lighter and heavier shirtings, stretch, organic and linen mix options, light, dark, raw and enzyme washes, regular, oversized and fitted shapes, three quarter and short sleeves, two pockets, no pocket and flap pockets, snap and concealed plackets, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
