The Crop Top Mariniere from Les Vacances d'Irina in navy and ecru, embracing the sea-faring spirit with a cool crop and oversized silhouette, structure provided by a square neckline, dropped shoulders and long sleeves that slightly flare at the end, patterned in a bold and timeless nautical stripe, listed at 315 GBP. It is worth saying at the outset that this garment is sold in one size, and that nearly everything difficult about this page follows from that single fact. The chart has one row: pit to pit 90, sleeve length 28, total length 46. It is worth working through the first of those numbers, because it cannot be read. Pit to pit is by convention a flat half measure, and every other page this run has read uses it that way. Read that way, 90 centimetres is 180 centimetres around, which is just under 71 inches, which on a body of about 34 inches is 37 inches of ease. This run has measured oversized garments at 17 to 19 inches of ease on a hoodie and 5 to 7 on a trench, so 37 is roughly twice the largest figure in the run and is not credible. Read the other way, as a circumference, 90 centimetres is about 35 inches, which on the same body gives about an inch and a half of ease. That is not oversized at all by this run's own tally. So one reading is impossible and the other contradicts the fit word on the page, and with only one row there is no second size to check it against. It is worth then turning to the sleeves, because the same garment says long sleeves and publishes 28 centimetres, and 28 centimetres is the length at which another garment in this run described its sleeves as short. The reference is the Crop Top Mariniere. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable tops on OEM and ODM terms, from cloth and stripe development to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The chart has one row and no second size to check it against. The pit to pit figure of 90 cm cannot be read with confidence: taken as a flat half measure, the convention the label implies, it doubles to 180 cm around, or 70.87 in, which on a body of about 34 in is about 37 in of ease and is not credible; taken as a circumference it is 35.43 in, which gives about 1.4 in of ease and is not oversized. The sleeve is given as 28 cm against a claim of long sleeves. The total length is 46 cm, which sits inside this run's cropped band. No body range is published for the one size and no model is given. Our proposal below is one row at a mid body, and we would quote grading this into a real size range separately.

Occasions and Styling
Suits everyday, resort and holiday wear. A cropped striped top works with a high waisted trouser or a full skirt, and the dropped shoulder makes it easy to layer.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes three measurements, names its fit in the bullet list, names the neckline, the dropped shoulders, the sleeve length and the flare at the cuff, names the stripe, states its fibre, gives two care clauses including a prohibition on tumble drying, states the country of manufacture and names the style code. It gives no cloth weight, no weave, no handle, no neck depth or width, no shoulder width or drop, no cuff opening, no flare measurement, no hem circumference, no stripe width, count or alignment, no body range for its one size, no model, no shrinkage figure and no certification, and it carries two photographs. Three things follow: a single row of measurements that cannot be read, a fit word that cannot be computed on a garment with one size, and a sleeve whose number and whose adjective disagree.
Ninety, and that is the first thing, and it is worth showing both readings because the point is that neither of them works. The chart says pit to pit, 90 centimetres. Pit to pit is a flat half measure by convention, and it is the convention on nearly every page this run has read, so the natural reading is that the garment measures 180 centimetres around the chest. That is just under 71 inches. Set against a body of about 34 inches, that is roughly 37 inches of ease. It is worth saying how far outside this run's experience that is. The loosest garments this run has measured are a hoodie at 17 to 19 inches of ease and a trench at 5 to 7. Thirty seven is about twice the largest figure in the run, and there is no construction here that would make it wearable: 100 per cent cotton, no stretch, no drawstring, no tie. So that reading is not credible. It is worth then taking the other reading, which is that the page has used the label loosely and the 90 is a circumference. Ninety centimetres is about 35 and a half inches, and on the same body that is about an inch and a half of ease. And an inch and a half is not oversized by any measure this run has recorded: it is less than the trench, and the trench was the least oversized of this run's three oversized garments. So one reading is impossible and the other contradicts the fit word printed directly above it. It is worth saying why this cannot be settled, because that is the finding rather than the number. On a chart with several sizes, an implausible figure can be checked against its neighbours: if one row is out of line with the rows either side, it is wrong. Here there are no neighbours. One row, three numbers, no model, no stated body range. So the ambiguity is not resolvable from the page, and it is not resolvable by a customer either. It is worth adding what else the one size costs, because the list is longer than the missing measurement. There is no statement of which bodies the one size is meant to fit. Most brands selling one size say so, usually as a range: fits a UK 8 to 14, or a US 2 to 8. This page does not. And there is no model. So the two pieces of information that would let a customer place herself against this garment, a range and a body, are both absent, and the single number that is present cannot be read.
Twenty eight, and that is the second thing, and it is the clearest instance yet of something this run has been circling for most of its length. The bullets say long sleeves. The description says long sleeves that slightly flare at the end. The chart says 28 centimetres. It is worth putting that beside the rest of this run's sleeve numbers, because the comparison is not close. This run has recorded short sleeves at 11, at 15 to 19, at 16 to 18, at 27 to 32, at 28 to 31, at 30 to 32, at 32 to 35, at 39 to 42 and at 40 to 44. And it has recorded long sleeves at 52, at 53 to 56, at 53 to 58, at 60 to 66 and at 74 to 76. Twenty eight sits in the middle of the short group and at the very bottom of the long group. It is worth being exact about the collision, because one garment makes it unavoidable. Another garment in this run, from a different brand, published 27 to 32 centimetres and described them as short puff sleeves. This one publishes 28 and describes them as long. The numbers are the same and the words are opposites. It is worth then asking whether the two can be reconciled by how they were measured, because this garment gives a clue that most do not. The bullets say dropped shoulders and dropped sleeves. On a dropped shoulder the seam sits down the arm rather than at the shoulder point, so a sleeve measured from that seam is shorter than the same sleeve measured from the shoulder. That is a real effect and it explains part of the gap. But it does not explain all of it, because another garment in this same batch has raglan sleeves and measures 74 to 76 centimetres, and a raglan sleeve is measured from the neckline and is therefore longer. So this run now has, in one batch, three garments all described as having long sleeves, measuring 28, 53 to 56 and 74 to 76, with at least two different start points and not one page stating where its measurement begins. It is worth saying plainly what that does to the word. Long now spans 28 to 76 centimetres in this run, which is a factor of nearly three, and the range overlaps the range of short. The words carry no information at all.
Forty six, and that is the third thing, and it is the one claim on this page that lands. The bullets say cropped and the description says a cool crop, and 46 centimetres sits inside the band this run has now measured four times for that word: 46, 44 to 47, 48 to 54 and 50 to 53. So cropped is the one length word in this run that means something, and it means something here. It is worth then taking the two other construction details, because both are named and neither is measured. The neckline is square. A square neck is defined by its width and its depth, and neither is given. The shoulders are dropped. A dropped shoulder is defined by how far the drop is, and no shoulder width is given either. It is worth saying why that matters more here than on a sized garment, because it is the same reason as before. On a one size garment the shoulder is what decides whether the thing stays up. A too wide dropped shoulder on a narrow body falls off, and there is no other size to move to. It is worth closing on the stripe, because this is the eighth garment in this run named for a pattern that carries no dimensions. The garment is called Mariniere, which is the name of the stripe. The description says a bold and timeless nautical stripe. There is no stripe width, no stripe count, no repeat and no alignment statement, and a Breton stripe is defined by its width. It is worth adding the alignment point, because it is specific to this garment rather than general. With dropped shoulders and a square neckline, whether the stripes run level across the body and meet correctly at the neck is the first thing a customer sees, and nothing on the page says whether they do. It is worth finishing on the cloth, which is 100 per cent cotton with no weight, no weave and no handle, and on the label, which says machine wash cold on a delicate cycle and do not tumble dry. Cold is a word and not a temperature, and there is no shrinkage figure on 100 per cent cotton. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
Optional upgrades include grading the one size block into a real range and stating the body range it covers, publishing a model and a second photograph, quoting the cloth weight, weave and handle, measuring and publishing the chest as a circumference with the flat figure labelled, the neck depth and width, the shoulder width and drop, the cuff opening and the flare, the sleeve length with its start point declared, the hem circumference, the stripe width, count, repeat and alignment, adding a shrinkage figure and a wash temperature in degrees to the label, heavier and lighter cotton jerseys, cotton and linen mixes, organic cotton and interlock, wider, narrower, yarn dyed and printed stripes and plain cloths, boat, crew and V necks, set-in and raglan shoulders, straight long, three quarter and short sleeves, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
