The Sculpted Uma Sleeveless Maxi from Apiece Apart in dark olive, crafted from an Italian crinkle wave with a clean round neckline and a softly defined waist, listed at 595 GBP with all four sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with the size chart, because it contains something this run has not met before and it is not a small thing. The chart has five size columns: 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 US. It gives measurements for all five, at 43, 44, 45, 46 and 47 centimetres pit to pit and 133 centimetres in length. And the garment is offered in four sizes: 2, 4, 6 and 8 US. There is no US 10. So the chart publishes a full set of measurements for a size that cannot be bought. It is worth being precise about why this is worse than a blank cell, because a blank cell would be honest. The US 10 column carries 47 centimetres, which is a plausible number and is also not the number another garment from this brand gives for its US 10. That garment, in this same batch, is sold in five sizes and its US 10 measures 50 centimetres. So somebody entered a real looking figure into a slot for a size that does not exist. It is worth then turning to the bust column itself, because it is perfectly even, and because this run has recently learned that a perfectly even column is not the good news it looks like. The steps are 1, 1, 1 and 1. Set against bodies of roughly 32 to 40 inches, that even grade gives away about 4.85 inches of ease across the range, against about 1.7 inches on the other Apiece Apart maxi in this batch, which grades unevenly. Set against bodies of roughly 32 to 40 in, the ease runs from about 1.9 in of room at a US 2 to about 3 in short at a US 10. The column steps exactly 1 cm at every step. The total length is 133 cm at every size. Note that the chart as published carries five size columns with full measurements, while the garment is offered in four sizes: there is no US 10 to buy.

Occasions and Styling
Suits occasion, evening and day to evening. A sleeveless crinkle maxi in a dark colour moves from day to evening, and the crinkle packs flat for travel.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes two measurements, states a fit statement, a model height and size and a size conversion from US to letter sizes, names the maxi length, the round neckline, the sleeveless cut, the body darts, the A-line skirt and the zip, names the cloth origin and its texture, gives a care instruction that follows from its own composition, states the country of manufacture, lists the construction in a bullet list and carries all four of its sizes in stock. It gives no cloth weight, no mill, no metallic type, no wave depth, repeat or stretch percentage, no waist measurement, no dart count or length, no neckline depth or width, no armhole depth or strap width, no hem circumference, no shoulder width, no zip length, no lining statement, no shrinkage figure and no certification, its length column is frozen, and its chart carries a full set of measurements for a size it does not sell. Three things follow: the phantom size column, the even grade that is worse than an uneven one, and the cloth that is named by origin and then not specified.
Forty seven, and that is the first thing, and it belongs to a size that does not exist. The chart on this page has five size columns: 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 US, with a pit to pit and a length for each. The garment is offered in four sizes: 2, 4, 6 and 8 US. There is no US 10. So the page publishes a complete set of measurements for a garment in a size a customer cannot buy, and it is worth being precise about why that is worse than leaving the column out, because leaving it out would have cost nothing. The figure given for the US 10 is 47 centimetres. That is a plausible number. It is also not the number this brand gives for a US 10 elsewhere: another maxi from this brand in this same batch is sold in five sizes and its US 10 measures 50 centimetres. So somebody put a real looking figure into a slot, and the slot is for a size that is not in the range. It is worth saying what that does to a customer, because it is not a theoretical problem. A customer who wears a US 10 reads a chart, finds her size, sees 47 centimetres, works out whether it will fit, and then goes looking for it. It is not there. It is worth then working out how it happened, because the mechanism is visible in this batch. All three Apiece Apart garments in this batch have five column charts. Two of them are sold in five sizes and one is not. So the chart is a template with five slots, and it was filled in for a garment with four. It is worth setting that beside something this run found two batches ago, because the two together make a category this run did not have before. That was a dress whose image set contained a photograph of a different product, a check bag, third in the sequence, with no note explaining it. That was a template error too: an image slot filled with the wrong content. So this run now has two instances of the same underlying failure, in two different places on a product page, from two different brands: the container is fixed and the content is not checked against it. It is worth adding the length column, which makes the point again from another direction. The length is 133 centimetres in all five columns, including the one for the size that does not exist. So the template was filled downward as well as across.
One, one, one, one, and that is the second thing, and this run has to be careful here because it has spent its whole length reading a column like this as good news. The bust runs 43, 44, 45, 46 and 47: exactly one centimetre at every step, no wobble, no blocks, nothing that looks wrong. And it is the worst graded garment in this batch. It is worth showing the arithmetic, because it is the whole point. A body across a US 2 to 10 grows about two inches a size, so about five centimetres around. A one centimetre flat grade gives two centimetres around. So at every step the garment falls about three centimetres behind the body, which is about 1.2 inches, and over four steps that is nearly five inches. It is worth putting the actual ease figures beside that estimate, because they confirm it. The dress measures 33.9 to 37 inches around and the bodies are 32 to 40, so the ease goes from about 1.9 inches of room at a US 2 to about 3 inches short at a US 10. About 4.85 inches given away. It is worth now setting the other maxi from this brand in this batch beside it, because this is the comparison that matters and this run has been building towards it for several batches. Same brand, same batch, same cloth at the same three percentages, same price, same model, same fit statement. That dress grades its bust at one, one, three and three, which looks like a fault and is not, and it gives away about 1.7 inches. So the uneven column costs 1.7 inches and the perfectly even one costs 4.85. The difference is more than three inches of room at the top of the range, and it is worth saying plainly what that means: on one of these two dresses a US 10 has room, and on the other she is three inches short. And both pages say Fits true to size. Select your usual size. It is worth being fair that part of this is taken up in the wearing. The cloth is a crinkle wave, and a crinkle stretches because of the way it is made rather than because of anything in its fibre content, so a dress cut short will give. But this run has now met that explanation many times and it is never quantified: no stretch percentage, no wave depth, nothing to tell a customer how much the cloth will actually give. It is worth closing on the length, which has the same problem as the bust and a simpler one. The length is 133 centimetres at every size. Four sizes, one length. So a US 8 gets the same 133 centimetres as a US 2, and this run has now found the same freezing on all three Apiece Apart garments in this batch, and on a dress from another brand whose length stepped two, one, one and zero before that. On a garment this long it matters more than usual, because 133 centimetres is floor length on the five foot ten model and would trail on the ground on somebody appreciably shorter, and the only model published is the tall one.
Italian, and that is the third thing, and it is worth giving the credit because this run almost never gets a cloth origin. The description says the dress is crafted from an Italian crinkle wave. Two pieces of information: where the cloth came from and what it does. And the crinkle wave then has no wave depth, no repeat and no stretch percentage, and the Italian has no mill named, so both halves of it stop one step short. It is worth setting that beside the rest of the specification, which is where this page is thin. There is no cloth weight, on a 595 pound dress. There is no metallic type, and the panel says 7% metallic, which is the first metallic fibre this run has read with a percentage attached and which could be a Lurex thread, a foil or a coated fibre, three things that behave differently. There is no lining statement. It is worth saying why that last one is sharper here than usual, because this batch provides the comparison directly. Another garment from this brand in this same batch, in the identical cloth at the identical three percentages, declares itself Unlined in its own bullet. This one says nothing. So the same brand, the same cloth, and one garment answers the lining question and the other does not, which means the silence here is not information about the dress. It is worth then turning to the two smaller gaps, and the second of them is a small thing that turns out not to be small. The description says a softly defined waist and the bullets say body darts at the waist. There is no waist measurement, no dart count and no dart length. So the waist is where the dress is shaped and it is not in the chart. And the style code field on this garment reads DRKOL. The other two Apiece Apart garments in this batch carry real style numbers. DRKOL is a colour code: dark olive. So the field is free text, it is filled inconsistently, and a customer or a stockist trying to identify this dress by its code would be looking for a colour. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
Optional upgrades include publishing a chart with only the sizes that are sold, grading the length across the sizes and grading the bust to hold the ease at the largest size, quoting the cloth weight and naming the mill and the metallic type, measuring the wave depth, repeat and stretch percentage, measuring and publishing the waist with the dart count and length, the neckline depth and width, the armhole depth and the strap width, the hem circumference, the shoulder width and the zip length, stating whether the dress is lined, adding shrinkage figures to the label and publishing a fit word and a second model height, crinkle without metal, Lurex in a stated type, plain weaves, deeper and finer waves and pleated finishes, plain waist seams, gathered waists and pintucks, V, square and boat necks, cap and short sleeves, midi and floor lengths, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
