The Maravilla Pintuck Maxi Shell from Apiece Apart in shell pink, framed by short puff sleeves, with pintucks at the waist to anchor the design, an A-line skirt falling from the waist, a textured crinkle cloth and a zip at the back with a centre front slit, listed at 595 GBP with three of five sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with the bust, because this column looks faulty and it is the best thing on the page, and proving that requires putting it beside another garment from this brand in this same batch. The pit to pit runs 42, 43, 44, 47 and 50 centimetres. The steps are 1, 1, 3 and 3. Uneven, and not in the way rounding produces. A clean grade written in whole centimetres swings between two and three; this one starts at one and ends at three, which no rounding can do. So it is a decision, and it is worth working out what the decision buys. Set against bodies of roughly 32 to 40 inches across a US 2 to 10, the ease runs from about 1 inch of room at a US 2 to about two thirds of an inch short at a US 10, so across the whole range it gives away about 1.7 inches. The other garment, a sleeveless maxi from the same brand in the same batch, in the same cloth, at the same price, on the same model, with the same fit statement, grades its bust at a perfectly even 1 centimetre and gives away about 4.85 inches. The even one is more than three inches worse at the top of the range. This run has spent dozens of batches treating an even column as good grading, and this pair is the evidence that it has been wrong. The reference is the Maravilla Pintuck Maxi Shell. The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the dress laid down, doubling to 84, 86, 88, 94 and 100 cm around, or 33.07, 33.86, 34.65, 37.01 and 39.37 in. Set against bodies of roughly 32 to 40 in across a US 2 to 10, the ease runs from about 1.1 in of room at the smallest size to about 0.6 in short at the largest. The bust steps 1, 1, 3 and 3, which is not a rounding artefact but a grade that widens towards the top of the range. The sleeve runs 11 and 12 cm. The total length runs 131, 133 and then 136 at the three largest sizes, so the length stops grading at a US 6.

Occasions and Styling
Suits occasion, evening, wedding and resort dressing. A crinkle maxi with metallic in it moves from day to evening, and the crinkle packs flat for travel.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes three measurements for all five sizes, states a fit statement, a model height and size and a size conversion from US to letter sizes, names the pintucks, the puff sleeves, the A-line skirt, the centre front slit, the zip and the fact that the dress is unlined, gives a care instruction that follows from its own composition, states the country of manufacture, lists the construction in a bullet list and names the style code. It gives no cloth weight, no metallic type, no crinkle depth, repeat or stretch percentage, no pintuck count, width, depth or spacing, no sleeve opening, no slit length, no zip length, no neckline depth, no hem circumference, no shoulder width, no shrinkage figure and no certification. Three things follow: the bust curve that is better than it looks, the sleeve and length that are not, and the metallic cloth that is declared and then left undescribed.
One, one, three, three, and that is the first thing, and it is worth saying at once that this column looks worse than it is. The bust runs 42, 43, 44, 47 and 50 centimetres, so the steps are one, one, three and three. Last batch this run worked out that a column swinging between two and three is usually a clean grade rounded to whole centimetres and is therefore fine. This is not that shape. A rounded grade cannot start at one and finish at three. So this is a decision, and it is worth setting it beside the other garment from this brand in this same batch to see what the decision buys, because the two together are the most useful pair this run has read. That garment is a sleeveless maxi, same brand, same batch, same cloth at the same three percentages, same price, same model, same fit statement. Its bust runs 43, 44, 45, 46 and 47: a perfectly even one centimetre at every step. It is worth converting both to ease, because that is the only way to compare them. Across a US 2 to 10 a body grows about two inches a size, so roughly 32 to 40 inches. This dress measures 33 to 39 inches around, so its ease goes from about 1.1 inches of room down to about 0.6 of an inch short: about 1.7 inches given away across the range. The other dress measures 34 to 37 inches around, so its ease goes from about 1.9 inches of room down to about 3 inches short: about 4.85 inches given away. It is worth stating the consequence plainly, because it is the finding. The garment with the perfectly even bust column is more than three inches worse at the largest size than the garment with the uneven one. And both of them carry the same sentence, Fits true to size. Select your usual size. On one of them it is close to true. On the other it is three inches short. It is worth saying what this does to this run's own vocabulary, because it is uncomfortable. This run has spent dozens of batches reading charts, and whenever a column stepped evenly it recorded that as good grading and moved on, and whenever a column stepped unevenly it recorded a fault. That is backwards. The goal of grading is not an even column. It is an even result, meaning the same amount of room on every body. A body grows about two inches per US size, which is about five centimetres around, and a one centimetre flat grade gives two centimetres around, which is less than half of it. So any garment graded evenly in centimetres is guaranteed to get tighter as it gets bigger. The only way to avoid that is to grade unevenly, which is exactly what this dress does. It is worth closing on the fairness of it, because the run should not overclaim. This dress is still short at the top, by about two thirds of an inch, and the cloth is described as a crinkle, which stretches because of its structure, so some of that shortfall is taken up in the wearing. But the shape of the curve is right, and the other dress's is not, and only one of the two looks wrong on the page.
Eleven, and that is the second thing, and it is the shortest sleeve this run has measured by a distance. The sleeve length runs 11 and 12 centimetres, which is about four and a half inches. The bullets call these set-in short puff sleeves and the description says the dress is framed by them. Four and a half inches is a cap. It is worth setting the rest of the run beside it, because the spread on one word is now very wide. This run has recorded short sleeves at 15 to 19 centimetres, at 16 to 18, at 27 to 32, at 28 to 31, at 30 to 32, at 32 to 35, at 39 to 42 and at 40 to 44. Eleven is the bottom of that, so the word short now covers a range of four times its own smallest value, and the shortest short sleeve in this run is a quarter of the longest. It is worth then noting what the word is doing here, which is the same thing it does everywhere in this run. Puff is a word about volume. The chart measures the sleeve in centimetres, which is a length. So the page measures the one dimension the word is not about, and there is no sleeve opening and no puff measurement. It is worth turning to the length, which is where this garment does fail. The total length runs 131, 133, 136, 136 and 136. So it grades by two, then three, then nothing at all: the US 6, the US 8 and the US 10 are all 136 centimetres. This run has named this shape before, on a dress whose length stepped two, one, one and zero and on a cardigan that ran out the same way, and the reading was that the larger sizes are filled in rather than graded out. It is the same here, and it is worth saying who it lands on: a US 10 gets a dress 3 centimetres wider in the flat than a US 8 and exactly as long. It is worth adding what is missing from a floor length dress, because this is the one measurement that would matter most to whoever buys it. There is a centre front slit, and no slit length. The slit is what makes a 136 centimetre dress walkable, and on a dress this long it is the difference between a dress you can move in and one you cannot, and it is not measured.
Metallic, and that is the third thing, and it is worth giving the page its due first because the panel is unusually complete. It reads 57% cotton, 36% viscose and 7% metallic. This run has read hundreds of fibre panels by now and this is the first with a metallic fibre in it, given to a percentage. And the care label follows from it: dry clean only, one clause, and metallic threads are exactly the reason a garment cannot be washed, so the panel and the label agree with each other, which this run does not often get to say. It is worth then listing what is missing, and the first item is the one that decides how the garment feels. There is no metallic type. Metallic is a category and not a material: it could be a Lurex thread, a foil, or a fibre with a coating on it, and those behave differently against the skin and wear differently in cleaning. There is no cloth weight either, and the cloth is described as a textured crinkle, with no crinkle depth, no repeat and no stretch percentage. That last one matters more than usual here, because a crinkle cloth stretches by virtue of its structure and not by virtue of any fibre in it, so the stretch is real and is invisible in the panel. This run has now met this shape of omission many times: shirring, smocking, ties, elasticated waists, drawstrings, and now a crinkle. A mechanism that lets a garment give, described in prose and absent from the specification. It is worth then turning to the two construction details, because one is declared unusually well and one not at all. The dress says Unlined, in its own bullet. This run has spent most of its length asking whether a garment is lined and getting no answer, and here is a brand answering in one word, including when the answer is that there is nothing to declare. And that makes the metallic question sharper rather than softer, because at 7% metallic and unlined, the metal is on the inside of the dress as well as the outside, and there is no note about it. The other detail is the pintucks. The description says they sit at the waist to anchor the design. There is no count, no width, no depth and no spacing. It is worth setting that beside a jacket from this run one batch ago, whose description said it was defined by its hem and whose chart measured nothing about the hem. Two brands, two batches running, same structure: the page names the element that anchors the design and measures three things that are not it. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
Optional upgrades include quoting the cloth weight and naming the metallic type, measuring the crinkle depth, repeat and stretch percentage, grading the length across all five sizes rather than freezing it at the top three, giving the pintuck count, width, depth and spacing, the sleeve opening, the slit length, the zip length, the neckline depth, the hem circumference and the shoulder width, adding a lining or binding the seams, publishing a fit word and shrinkage figures, cotton and viscose crinkle without metal, Lurex in a stated type, pleated and smooth cloths, deeper and finer crinkles, plain waist seams, gathered and darted waists, cap and longer short sleeves and sleeveless bodices, midi and floor lengths, half and full linings, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
