The Gemma Shirt from Bellerose in a fine red and white check, made from soft cotton poplin with tailored shirting details, a pointed collar, a button up front, a single chest pocket, buttoned cuffs and an elasticated waistband, listed at 155 GBP with four of five sizes in stock. It is worth beginning with something this run has not encountered before, which is not a problem with the numbers but with the shape of the table. The shirt is offered in five sizes, XS through XL, and the XL is in stock and can be bought. The chart has four columns. It stops at L. So the largest size this brand sells has no published measurements of any kind, and a customer can put it in her basket. It is worth setting that beside another garment from this brand in this same batch, which does the opposite: it is offered in four sizes and its chart has five columns, including a size that cannot be bought. Same brand, same batch, and the two errors run in opposite directions. The second thing worth setting out is the fit word, and it can be checked against another garment from this brand in this same batch. This shirt is described as a relaxed fit and measures 64 to 76 centimetres pit to pit, which is 128 to 152 centimetres around, or about 50 to 60 inches. The other garment is a coat described as an oversized fit, and it measures 60 to 63 centimetres, which is about 47 to 50 inches. So at the same size label, the relaxed shirt is three inches wider than the oversized coat at the small end and ten inches wider at the large end. The reference is the Gemma Shirt. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable shirts on OEM and ODM terms, from poplin sourcing by weight to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The pit to pit figures are flat half measures taken with the shirt laid down, doubling to 128, 136, 144 and 152 cm around, or 50.39, 53.54, 56.69 and 59.84 in. The bust steps exactly 4 cm at every step and the total length steps exactly 3 cm at every step, from 46 to 55 cm. The sleeve length is 52 cm at every published size. The reference offers five sizes from XS to XL and publishes four columns, with no measurements at all for XL, which is in stock. Our proposed chart below completes the grade through XL.

Occasions and Styling
Suits autumn, spring, smart casual and office dressing. A checked poplin shirt with an elasticated waist dresses up or down, as the reference says, and the waist lets it be worn loose or bloused.
Production and Quality Control
The reference publishes three columns, grades the bust and the length cleanly, names the weave, which almost nobody does, gives a count for the chest pocket, states the fit word, declares the fibre, states the country of manufacture, lists the construction in a bullet list and names the style and colour codes. It gives no cloth weight, no yarn count, no check repeat size, no waist measurement, no elastic length or stretch range, no collar height or spread, no button count or size, no cuff circumference, no pocket dimensions, no sleeve measurement origin, no shrinkage figure, no colourfastness figure, no size conversion and no model, it freezes its sleeve column, it publishes four columns for five sizes, and it carries one photograph. Three things follow: the missing column for a size you can buy, the fit word that is wider than this brand's oversized coat, and the elasticated waist that is the only adjustable dimension and the only unmeasured one.
Four columns, five sizes, and that is the first thing, and it is a class of error this run has not met in some forty batches of reading charts. The shirt is offered in XS, S, M, L and XL. The XL is in stock. The chart runs XS, S, M and L, and stops. So the largest size this brand sells has no pit to pit, no sleeve length and no total length published anywhere on the page, and a customer can buy it. It is worth being clear about why this is a different kind of fault from the ones this run usually finds, because this run has spent all that time arguing about the numbers inside charts, and this is not about a number. It is about whether the table covers the same set of sizes as the page it sits on. That is the most elementary check there is, and it does not require a tape measure or a tech pack or any kind of judgement: it requires counting the columns and counting the sizes and seeing whether they match. It is worth setting this beside another garment from this brand in this same batch, because the two make a pair and the pair is the interesting part. That garment is a jacket offered in four sizes, XS to L, and its chart has five columns, running XS to XL, so it publishes measurements for a size that cannot be bought. Here, a size that can be bought has no measurements. Same brand, same season, same week, and the two errors point in opposite directions. So whatever process produces these tables is not checked against the size list in either direction, and a customer cannot tell from one garment which way the mismatch will run on the next. It is worth adding what the brand could have done at no cost. The bust grades at exactly four centimetres and the length at exactly three, both perfectly regular, so continuing both one more step would have given 80 and 58 for the XL. Our proposed chart below does exactly that. It took nothing but arithmetic that the page already contains.
Fifty, and that is the second thing, and it is the cleanest demonstration this run has had that fit words do not sit on a scale. This shirt is described as a relaxed fit. It measures 64 to 76 centimetres pit to pit, which doubles to 128 to 152 centimetres around, or about 50 to 60 inches. Another garment from this brand in this same batch is a coat, described as an oversized fit, and it measures 60 to 63 centimetres pit to pit, or 120 to 126 centimetres around, or about 47 to 50 inches. So at the smallest size the relaxed shirt is about three inches wider than the oversized coat, and at the largest size it is about ten inches wider. It is worth pausing on how strange that is. Oversized means more room than relaxed, by any ordinary reading of the two words, and a coat is worn over other clothes while a shirt is worn against the skin, so the coat ought to be the roomier of the two by construction as well as by name. Both run the other way. It is worth being fair about the caveat, which is that neither page states how the pit to pit was taken, and a coat may be measured with the front closed or open or with the lining included. That caveat is real. But it is itself part of the finding: two measurements printed in the same units under the same heading on pages from the same brand cannot be compared, because nobody said how either was taken. It is worth adding what the run has established about these words over the last two batches, because it now explains this. Fit words describe a direction, not a state. Last batch this run found two garments from one brand whose ease moved in opposite directions as the sizes rose, one getting looser and one tighter. The same thing is true here across garments: this shirt's ease grows from about eighteen inches at XS to about twenty two at L, while the oversized coat's ease shrinks. So the two words are not two points on one scale. They are two different slopes, and the page gives no scale and no slope. It is worth closing on the sleeve, which is 52 centimetres at every published size, frozen across four. This run has said on every frozen sleeve that a sleeve repeated across sizes will be short on everyone above the smallest, and it is worth adding the specific here, which is sharper than usual: the body of this shirt grows twelve centimetres across the published sizes and the sleeve does not move at all, and then there is a fifth size with no measurements at either.
Elasticated, and that is the third thing, and it is the neatest instance of something this run keeps finding. The shirt has an elasticated waistband, and the description says it provides structure to the silhouette. The panel reads 100% cotton, with no elastane and no elastic thread, so the stretch in the garment is present in the construction and absent from the specification. This run has seen this several times now: shirring on a dress, smocking on a shoulder, ties on a back, drawstrings on a coat, and now elastic in a waistband. Each time, the garment can move and the fibre panel does not account for it. It is worth saying why this one matters more than the others. An elasticated waist is the one dimension on this shirt that a customer can change: the bust is cut, the sleeves are cut, the length is cut, and the waist draws in. And the chart measures pit to pit, sleeve and length. It does not measure the waist at all. So the single adjustable dimension on this garment is the single dimension the chart omits, and there is no elastic length and no relaxed or stretched figure either, so a customer cannot tell how far it draws in or how far it will let out. It is worth then setting the care label beside it, because the two together are a fair picture of this page. The label reads wash at 30 degrees, tumble dry and iron on low heat. Tumble drying is permitted. Another garment from this brand in this same batch is also 100% cotton and its label says do not tumble dry. So one brand, one season, one fibre, and two opposite instructions, with no shrinkage figure on either to help a customer choose. It is worth adding what else the label omits, because the garment makes the omission specific. The check is red and white. Red and white washed together is the textbook case for washing with like colours, and there is no such instruction, and no colourfastness figure either. There is no bleach instruction. And cotton poplin tumbled will shrink, and the shirt is 46 to 55 centimetres long, so a shrinkage figure would tell a customer what that length becomes. It is worth closing on the photographs, because it is the most basic gap on the page. There is one. This run has recorded five and six on most garments and this is the first with a single image. The shirt has a check whose scale is described only as fine, a chest pocket, buttoned cuffs, a pointed collar and an elasticated waist that the description calls structural. One photograph cannot show the back of the garment at all, and cannot show the check at a readable scale, and cannot show the waistband. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.
Optional upgrades include publishing a column for XL, or withdrawing the size, quoting the cloth weight in grams per square metre and the yarn count, giving the check repeat size, measuring the waist relaxed and stretched and giving the elastic length, grading the sleeve across the sizes, stating the sleeve measurement origin, giving the collar height and spread, the button count and size, the cuff circumference and the chest pocket dimensions, adding washing with like colours, washing inside out, a bleach instruction and shrinkage and colourfastness figures to the label, agreeing the ease at every size so the fit word means one thing, publishing a size conversion and a model height, adding further photographs including a back view, organic cotton poplin, cotton linen and brushed cotton, larger and windowpane checks and plain dye, plain hems, drawcord and belted waists, plain and French cuffs and short sleeves, band and round collars, regular and slightly relaxed fits, size set, colour development, private label, hangtag and care labelling.
Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
