That comparison is the clearest demonstration we have produced of how to read a measurement. There are no reviews and no fit votes on this listing, so there is no score to quote. There is a fourth instance of a pattern we can now state as a rule, a comparison that shows how that rule should be applied, and a care consequence of the elastane content.

The fourth time the bust and waist are equal, and the rule is now solid, and that is the first thing. We have met this arithmetic three times before. On a strapless tube mini both were published at 19 inches. On a long sleeve satin mini both were 36. On a cut-out knit gown both were 20. And here both are 22. In every case the conclusion about the shape has been the same, and four instances is enough to state it as a rule: when the bust and the waist are published as the same figure, the garment has no waist suppression, because a garment that comes in at the waist cannot possibly measure the same in both places. This one is filed under bodycon, which is consistent, since an unshaped tube that clings is exactly what bodycon means. What the number itself means is a separate question and has to be worked out each time, and that is where this garment becomes interesting.

The same small number, and this time it is justified, and the comparison is the whole point, and that is the second thing. Look at what this has in common with the cut-out knit gown and what it does not. Both publish a bust and a waist of roughly 20 to 22 inches. Both are filed under bodycon. Both have measurements far under the model's. The gown was 60% viscose with 40% nylon and no elastane at all, and we said there that 20 inches could not go onto a 33 inch bust without a mechanism, that the most likely explanation was a flat half measurement, and that we would measure it ourselves rather than work from the published figure. This garment is 77% polyamide with 23% elastane in a stretch jersey. Twenty three per cent is near the top of the range we have collected across this series, above the 19% on two lace garments and the 18% on a nylon mesh that comfortably explained their negative ease, and we said of the top of that range that it is genuine compression cloth, the sort of thing you can design around rather than merely add for recovery. And it is a knit besides, which we established matters: a knit contributes its own structural stretch, because it is made of loops and a loop can open, so the percentage and the construction compound. So this garment has two independent reasons to be able to be published at 22 and still go onto a 33 inch bust, and the gown had none. Same number, same shape, opposite verdicts. That is the method in one comparison: a published measurement is never read on its own, it is read against what mechanism on the garment could produce it. Where one exists, the number is information. Where none exists, the number is a claim that needs checking.

Twenty three per cent elastane makes heat the enemy and that is what the care label should say, and that is the third thing. The instruction is hand wash, and by the fibre alone that looks like the over cautious kind we have criticised more than once. Polyamide and elastane together are what swimwear is made of, and swimwear is designed to be worn in chlorinated and salt water and washed repeatedly and still hold its shape, so a hand wash instruction on this combination looks stricter than it needs to be. Here there is a reason, and it is the amount of elastane rather than the fibre itself. Elastane is a polyurethane based filament and it is degraded by heat: hot water, a tumble dryer and an iron all take power out of it, and the higher the content the more there is to lose. A garment at 4 or 5% elastane will survive a warm wash with most of its recovery intact. A garment at 23% has a great deal of its entire behaviour invested in that filament, and taking ten per cent of its power out is the difference between a compression garment and a loose one. So the correct instruction is not simply hand wash, it is hand wash in cool water, no tumble drying, and no ironing, and the label should say so, because a customer who hand washes and then puts it in a dryer has undone the point of the garment. We would also note what high elastane does to the size range, because this garment shows it directly: it is offered in three combined sizes rather than six single ones, which is unusual, and it works because a cloth that compresses this much genuinely accommodates a range of bodies in one size. We saw the same logic on a ribbed knit that was offered in only three sizes, where the knit was doing the accommodating. So high stretch buys you a smaller size range, which is a real saving in inventory and in returns, and it is worth designing for deliberately. One small note on the page itself: the description has a typographical error in the word for the ruched bust, which is a minor thing but worth mentioning because it is the kind of detail that suggests nobody read the listing before publishing it.
