Two consecutive lines say opposite things and one of them decides whether the dress can be worn, and that is the first thing. The listing says the garment is a plain weave and, in the next line, that it is a lightweight jersey. Those are not two ways of describing the same thing, they are opposites. A plain weave is the simplest woven construction, with warps and wefts crossing at right angles, and pulled along either of those directions it barely moves, because you are pulling on a yarn that is already straight. A jersey is a knit, made of interlocking loops, and it stretches because a loop can open, which is a structural stretch that has nothing to do with what the yarn is made of. We have relied on that difference repeatedly in this series: it is why a ribbed knit with no elastane at all could still be cut eight inches under the model's measurements, and why a pullover with 3% elastane in a woven georgette was a contradiction, since a woven cloth that close would not pass over the body. Here the garment is filed under bodycon, meaning close to the body, and it is a pullover with no zip, meaning it has to pass over the body to be got on. Those two can only both be true if the cloth stretches a great deal. A jersey can do that. A plain weave cannot. So one of those two lines is wrong, and which one it is determines whether this garment can be put on. What makes it worse is that no fibre is given either. Plain weave is a construction, not a material: it says how the cloth is put together and not a single thing about what it is made of. We have criticised listings for giving a fibre without a percentage, and for giving a name that the description does not support, but this is a more basic gap, because there is no way to begin reasoning about how this cloth will behave. We would establish both before anything else, and we would add a concealed zip, which makes the question moot.

A U-wire is the third kind of internal structure and it does a different job from the other two, and that is the second thing. We have found boning twice in this series and used it twice for different purposes. On a strapless gown it was support: a strapless garment has nothing over the shoulders, so a bone carries the load downward to the waist rather than letting the garment slide down the body. On a boned crepe maxi it was shaping: with no elastane in the cloth, bones stop the bodice creasing where the wearer bends and collapsing at the waist, so it presents a smooth front instead of following the surface beneath it. A U-wire is the third job again. It is a stiff element bent into a U and set into the front of a garment, and what it does is hold a neckline open in the shape it was designed to have. A deep V or a sweetheart neckline cut in a soft cloth does not stay open: the two sides fall toward each other, the drape collapses toward the centre, and the neckline ends up narrower and lower than it was drawn. A wire at the base of the V prevents that, because a stiff curve cannot close. So the three internal structures are: to hold a garment up, to keep it smooth, and to hold an opening open. That is worth separating because the specification is different each time. A bone that supports runs the full height of the bodice. A bone that shapes sits where the creasing is. A wire that holds a neckline open is a single curved piece whose shape is the entire point, so its gauge and its exact curve are what matter, and a wire that is slightly the wrong curve will push the neckline into a shape nobody drew. We would specify it as a shape rather than asking for a wire in general, and we would keep it, because on a draped front it is doing work nothing else can do.

Dry clean recommended is the weakest thing you can write and this garment has three reasons to want a firm instruction, and that is the third thing. We have collected a great many care wordings in this series and they fall in order. Dry clean only says this is the only safe method. Dry cleanable says this method is safe and leaves the rest open, which we criticised on a viscose gown because the openness invites a hand wash on a fibre that loses half its strength when wet. And dry clean recommended, which is what this says, is weaker again, because recommended is advice rather than instruction: it tells the customer what someone suggests and leaves her entirely free to do otherwise. We criticised that wording once before on a lace and satin gown and said there that the garment needed a decision and had been given a hint. Here there are three reasons to want a firm one. The first is the crystal embellishment. We worked through this on a rhinestone fringed dress and said that stones are almost always attached with adhesive rather than thread, because there is no convenient way to sew one, and that some adhesives are attacked by dry cleaning solvent. So the embellishment needs its attachment method established and then the instruction set from it. The second is that the garment is fully lined, and the lining fibre is not published, and we have said throughout that a lining should match the fibre of its shell so the two layers move together. The third is that we do not know what the cloth is at all. Any one of those would justify a decision. All three together make a hint close to useless.
