There are no reviews and no fit votes on this listing, so there is no score to quote. There is the clearest sheerness statement in this series, a distinction between two properties of cloth that are easy to run together, and a care instruction we have called dangerous twice before.

This is the standard answer on sheerness and it has arrived twice, and that is the first thing. The listing says three things: that the garment is transparent, that underwear will be visible, and that undergarments are sold separately. We first met all three together on a silk gown and said then that it was the best handling of the question we had seen, because the first two clauses are the ones that do the work and the third is a courtesy that removes the last remaining doubt. It has taken this long for a second garment to do it. Meanwhile we have met a gown whose name meant translucent and whose page never said so, and we said a hint that depends on the customer's vocabulary is not a warning; a sheer maxi filed by the retailer under sheer dresses where the garment's own page said nothing; a backless mini where the retailer's badge knew and the description did not; and a cotton slip at 98 dollars that said it plainly, which we held up against a 4,498 dollar silk dress that said almost nothing at all. The conclusion from all of them has been identical: the amount of information on a page has nothing to do with the price and everything to do with whether whoever wrote it thought the customer needed to know. It is worth adding here that this garment makes the statement easy in a way those others did not, and it is the same reason we gave for the cotton slip: this is a mesh, and a mesh has holes in it by construction, so there is no version of it that is opaque and no photograph that could pretend otherwise. The brands that stay silent are usually the ones whose cloth might pass unnoticed in a photograph, which is exactly the case where the customer most needs telling.

Weight and opacity are not the same thing and this garment proves it, and that is the second thing, and it matters because the two are constantly run together. The cloth here is described as a midweight mesh. Take those two words separately. Mesh describes the structure: the cloth is made with openings in it, and openings mean you can see through it. Midweight describes how much the cloth weighs, which has almost nothing to do with whether you can see through it. A heavy cloth can be full of holes and a light cloth can be completely opaque. So this garment is simultaneously substantial and see-through, and both things are true at once. That is worth understanding because it explains what would otherwise look like a contradiction in how the garment is specified. Opacity is set by how tightly the cloth is made and by what is behind it. Weight is doing something else entirely here, and it is doing something important: this dress is 63 inches long, and a long garment in a light cloth does not hang, it floats and clings and follows the body instead of falling from it. We made the same point about a cotton t-shirt maxi, where the weight was the whole reason the garment worked, because a light jersey in a long garment clings and becomes transparent where it is lit from behind. So midweight is what lets a 63 inch mesh dress fall properly rather than cling, and it has been chosen independently of the fact that the cloth is see-through. When specifying a garment like this, the two need to be set separately: the aperture of the mesh sets how much is visible, and the weight sets how it hangs.

Ninety six per cent viscose with dry cleanable is the third time we have found this and it is still the riskiest pairing in the series, and that is the third thing. Viscose loses roughly half its strength when it is wet. That means a wet viscose garment is at its weakest at the exact moment somebody is handling it, and a 63 inch dress is heavy when wet, so it will distort under its own weight. We said this first about a viscose gown and called the same instruction the riskiest we had seen, and said it again about a viscose midi where a review was complaining about quality and cut. The instruction in both cases was dry cleanable, and the problem with that wording is that dry clean only means this is the only safe method while dry cleanable means this method is safe and leaves the rest open. On viscose, leaving it open invites a hand wash, and a hand wash is immersion in water, which is the one thing this fibre does not want. There is an additional reason to be careful with this particular garment: it is a mesh, and an open structure has less dimensional stability than a dense one, so it distorts more readily than the same fibre in a plain jersey would. So the outcome of washing it is genuinely unpredictable and the result, on a 63 inch dress, would be a garment that is no longer the same length all the way round. We would state dry clean only, which nobody misreads, and if a washable version is wanted we would change the fibre rather than soften the instruction, because viscose is doing nothing here that another fibre could not do better.
