Poplin is a dense cotton plain weave, and the property that matters is stiffness, which we discussed on another cotton dress: a dense plain weave holds a crease and holds a shape, which is why a bow made in poplin stands up where a bow in a soft cloth collapses. That stiffness is what lets the collar stand, what keeps the placket flat rather than rippling, and what holds the cuffs in a clean circle. We have made this point in other forms several times, notably about a shift dress where the waist carried ten inches of ease and where we said the same thing, that the figure is the garment's and not hers. There is a second consequence, and it is the reason to state the shape rather than only the number. A skirt with this much ease will not look fitted no matter what size is bought, and a customer expecting a shaped waist will be disappointed, while a customer who wants this shape will be delighted. That is a matter of expectation rather than of sizing, and the only way to set it is with words or with a photograph showing the skirt away from the body.

Side seam pockets gape, and that is the third thing, and it is the fault most likely to show up on this dress. A pocket set into a side seam is an opening cut into the seam, and the weight of whatever is in the pocket hangs on that seam and pulls the opening apart. Two things make it worse here. The first is the cloth: poplin is stiff, which is what we praised it for, but a stiff cloth does not drape closed over an opening, so a slit pocket in poplin tends to stand open rather than fall shut. The second is what people put in pockets, which is a phone, and a phone is heavy enough to pull the seam down visibly over the course of a day, and once the seam has stretched the pocket gapes permanently even when empty. Neither is a defect in the ordinary sense and nearly every shirt dress has this. The fix is small: a stay at the opening so it cannot stretch, and a pocket bag cut deep enough that a phone sits below the hip rather than right at the seam. We would also note that a stiff cloth shows the outline of the pocket bag through the front of the skirt more than a soft one would, since it does not fall away from what is behind it.
