The second elastic neckline, in a completely different fabric, and that is the first thing, and the difference in fabric is what makes it a confirmation. The question that governs any strapless garment is what holds it up, and we have collected five answers across this series. A ribbed knit relied on the tension of the knit and we said the grip would relax because there was no elastane to restore it. A short mini with a little elastane had the advantage of less weight below the grip. A leather tube dress could use none of them because leather has no stretch and will not gather onto an elastic, leaving it dependent on an exact circumference, which we called the hardest case. A viscose and elastane gown put an elastic in the neckline, and we called that the best answer up to that point because an elastic is a component with a measurable strength rather than a property of a cloth that degrades. This is the second garment to do that, and it is worth saying why the second one matters. That gown was a polyester satin, a smooth slippery cloth with plenty of drape. This is cotton poplin, which is the opposite: a dense, crisp, stiff plain weave that holds a shape rather than following the body. The same solution works in both. That is what makes it an answer rather than a coincidence. And cotton poplin turns out to have a particular advantage in a strapless garment, which is the stiffness we have talked about elsewhere. We noted on a poplin dress that the property doing the work there was stiffness, since a dense cotton plain weave holds a crease and holds a shape, and that a bow made in it stands up where a bow in a soft cloth collapses. In a strapless bodice that same stiffness means the band across the chest does not collapse or roll, and it holds its own line rather than following every change in the surface beneath it. So this is a good pairing of fabric and construction, and we would keep both.

Fourteen inches under is not a warning, and this is the fifth mechanism we have found that explains a number like that, and that is the second thing. We have now met this situation repeatedly, and the value of listing them is that the answer is never the same twice. On a shirt dress with a shirred skirt, the panel was gathered with elastic thread and the published hip was the gathered dimension, which is the smallest the panel can be rather than the largest, so a small number there was not a warning at all. On a bias cut gown, the bust was held at the neckline and everything below fell free, so the waist was where the drape lived. Pull it and it opens. So 20 inches at the bust is not a dress that will not fit, it is a dress before anyone is inside it. Five mechanisms, all producing numbers that look alarming on a page and all explained by how the garment is made rather than by anything to do with sizing. The practical conclusion is the one we have come to repeatedly: publish the figure and say what it means, because a customer comparing 20 with her own 34 will assume the garment is impossible, and the one sentence that explains it costs nothing. We would also specify the elastic thread in the smocking and test how it survives washing, since smocking depends entirely on that thread and it loses power over time, faster with heat.

Twenty three and a half inches needs a height beside it, and that is the third thing, and this garment makes the point more clearly than any other we have covered. The published length is 23.5 inches, which is the shortest garment in this series, worn by a model who is 179 cm tall. On her it is a mini that sits high on the thigh. On a wearer of average height, the same 23.5 inches is a substantially different proposition: it falls lower on the body relative to her frame, it covers more of her leg, and it reads as a different garment.
