Suspended Slip Dress

Suspended Slip Dress

A slip dress listed as 95% polyester with 5% elastane, unlined, in a lightweight jersey, with adjustable straps and a slit at the hem, machine wash, made in France, at 1,010 dollars. There are no reviews and no fit votes, so there is no score to quote. This garment carries the same care instruction as another dress we looked at a few groups ago and the opposite obligation goes with it, and the comparison is the clearest way we have found to show that a care instruction is not one decision but two. There is also a structural point about a slip that is easy to miss, which is where all of its weight actually goes, and a note on the slit that follows from that. The reference is the Suspended Slip Dress by Coperni in Black. Dongguan Bafinasa Garments Co., Ltd. develops comparable slip dresses on OEM and ODM terms, from fabric sourcing to retail or FBA ready packing. We publish this as a development reference and build your own version of it, and we do not supply the branded original or reproduce anyone else's label.

The published size 36 gives a 30 inch bust, a 22 inch waist, a 32 inch hip and a 40.5 inch length against a model at roughly 34, 23 and 36. The bust and hip are four inches under. There is no zip, so the garment has to pass over the body, which a jersey with elastane in it will do. We would confirm the worn measurements on a body.

Occasions and Styling

Suits evenings, layering, nights out and warm weather. A slip dress with adjustable straps works on its own and under things, and it is worth photographing it both ways, since that is how it will be used.

Production and Quality Control

There are no reviews and no fit votes on this listing, so there is no score to quote. There is a care instruction here that is the same as one we examined recently and means the opposite, and a structural point about slips that is easy to overlook.

The same instruction, the opposite obligation, and that is the first thing, and it is the clearest demonstration we have found of something worth stating plainly. A few groups ago we looked at a knit maxi that was also machine wash cold, and we made the point that machine washing is the only care instruction that places the burden on the factory rather than on the customer, because every other instruction tells her what to do while this one tells her she can put it in a machine, which means the garment had better survive one and whether it does was decided months earlier. The obligation that follows is pre-shrinking: the cloth has to be shrunk before it is cut, or the customer washes the garment and it comes out smaller than the chart says. That garment was 40% viscose, and viscose shrinks and is weak when wet, so the obligation there was real. This garment is 95% polyester with 5% elastane. Polyester does not shrink in any meaningful amount, and neither does elastane. So this garment carries the identical instruction and essentially no pre-shrinking obligation at all. The lesson is that a care instruction is not one decision but two, and they are independent. The first is whether the garment will survive being washed, which depends on the fibre and on the construction, and we have seen a case where the fibre was fine but the construction was not, since a satin abrades in a machine and takes permanent marks even when the polyester in it would survive perfectly. The second is whether the garment will change size, which depends almost entirely on the fibre. A page that says machine wash is answering the first question and, unless somebody thought about it, saying nothing at all about the second. We would check both separately.

A slip hangs from two straps and that is where all its problems start, and that is the second thing. Every other garment we have looked at has some other place for its weight to go: a dress with shoulders spreads the load across them, a strapless garment sends it down through boning or grips the body, a skirt sits on the hips. A slip has none of that. It is held up by two straps over the shoulders and nothing else, which means the entire weight of the garment is borne at two small points, and everything about how it feels comes down to those two points. That is why the straps are the part to spend time on. This garment has adjustable straps, which we have praised before on a one shoulder gown because shoulders vary in slope and in where a strap wants to sit, and an adjustable strap lets the wearer set it exactly rather than hoping a fixed length suits her. Here they are doing something else as well, which is setting how low the front sits, since on a slip the whole neckline position depends on strap length. So the adjusters are load bearing in two senses. What follows is a caution we raised on that one shoulder gown and which applies more here because the load is greater: the adjuster is a small metal fitting sitting on a strap, and it concentrates the weight of the garment onto a few millimetres of cloth. On a jersey that is a wear point, and over time the strap will thin there and may eventually tear. We would specify a smooth fitting with no sharp edge and a reinforcement behind it, so the load spreads along the strap instead of sitting on a line. The third point about a slip is the one people notice first, which is that narrow straps under a concentrated load dig into the shoulder. A wider strap, or one with the weight spread over a slightly larger area, is more comfortable for the same look, and on a jersey with some weight in it that is worth doing.

The slit needs a number on it, and that is the third thing, and it follows directly from what we just said. A slit at the hem opens when the wearer walks, because the two sides of it move independently with her legs. How far it opens depends on how high it starts, and that is the only fact that matters about it, and this listing does not say. We have met slits before in this series and the position has always been the interesting part: a vent at the back of a leather dress, which we said would tend to stand open rather than fall shut because leather is stiff and holds a shape, and which we noted is also the one place the wearer cannot check. A slit at the hem of a slip has a different problem, which is that it changes what the garment reveals as soon as she moves rather than stands still. So we would state the height, and we would photograph it walking, because a slit that looks modest standing still can be something else entirely in motion. There is a related point about the cloth. This is a lightweight jersey and it is unlined, and a light cloth cut close will show what is underneath it more than a heavier one would, so we would check the opacity, particularly in a dark colour against the light. Every bulk shipment gets a measurement report against your approved chart.

Optional upgrades include reinforced and smooth strap hardware, a wider strap for comfort under load, the slit height stated and photographed in motion, the opacity checked, the worn measurements confirmed on a body, alternative slit placements, alternative lengths, extended sizing, colour development and private label, hangtag and care labelling.

Pre-production sample approval, in-line inspection during cutting and sewing, and a final AQL inspection before packing, with measurement reports and photos shared before shipment.
