Bodycon changes what sheer means, and that is the first thing, and it is the most interesting thing on this page. The listing says what we have been asking for throughout this series: it states that the garment is made of a semi-sheer fabric and that underwear will be visible. Good. But the retailer also files this gown under bodycon dresses, and bodycon is the one category where a sheer cloth behaves completely differently. Think about what makes a sheer cloth more or less revealing. A cloth that stands away from the body shows a soft silhouette and very little detail, because there is air and shadow between the cloth and the skin. A cloth that clings to the body shows everything: every edge, every seam, every line, because there is nothing between the cloth and what is underneath it. So the same georgette is modestly sheer in a loose dress and thoroughly revealing in a bodycon one. That changes what the customer needs. Telling her that underwear will be visible is accurate but not sufficient, because on a bodycon gown the question is not only what is visible but what the whole outline looks like, and the answer is that it needs an underlayer of some kind rather than a different choice of underwear. A floor length bodycon gown needs a full slip. This is worth saying on the page, and it is worth noting that another gown from this same brand, which we covered a few groups ago, ships with a detachable bodysuit for exactly this reason, and we admired it then because it answers the question rather than raising it and because detaching it removes the one serious practical objection to that kind of undergarment. That garment did not need one as much as this one does. We would offer a detachable slip with this, and we would photograph it over the slip, which answers the customer's question before she has to ask it.

Bodycon and pullover contradict each other, and that is the second thing, and we would resolve it before sampling. A bodycon garment is by definition cut close to the body. A pullover has no opening, which means it has to pass over the widest part of the body in order to be got on at all. We made this point on a shirred shirt dress, where we explained that a garment with no opening must be cut larger than the body at every point along the way, so it is generous by necessity rather than by choice, and that is why that dress carried advice to size down. So a bodycon garment wants to be close and a pullover forces it to be loose, and the only way both can be true at once is if the cloth stretches a great deal and recovers. What does this cloth have? Three per cent elastane. We have been building a range across this series and we were blunt about the low end of it: a small elastane figure is not in the business of providing stretch, it is in the business of improving recovery, meaning it helps a cloth spring back rather than bag, and it will not by itself produce negative ease. Three per cent is at the low end. Georgette does help a little, because it is made from highly twisted yarns in a plain weave and has more give than a densely woven cloth, but not enough to make a close fitting gown pass over hips and shoulders comfortably. So either this garment is not as close fitting as the bodycon category suggests, or it is difficult to get on and off. Neither is good, and both are avoidable with a concealed side zip, which costs very little, is invisible on a gown, and removes the contradiction entirely. We would add one and then let the garment be as close as it likes.

The votes are usable and the rating is not, and that is the third thing, and it is worth separating them cleanly because a page usually presents them together as though they were the same kind of evidence. The rating is 5.0 from three reviews, and all three are ratings submitted with no written comment. So it tells you nothing about whether anyone liked the gown, only that three people clicked five stars. We have said this before in this series and it bears repeating because a 5.0 is a strong signal to a shopper and it is worth knowing when the signal is empty. The fit votes are a different matter.
