There is a disagreement between the name and the description that turns out to matter a great deal, a measurement explained by a single word, and a fastening that repeats the most exposed version of a caution we have raised several times.

Bead or accent, because the answer changes how the garment can be cleaned, and that is the first thing, and we can compare it directly now. The style name says gathered bead. The description says gold-tone accents. Those are not the same thing, and the difference is the whole of the care question, because we looked at a heavily beaded dress recently and the instruction on it was spot clean only, which is the strictest we have met. The reasoning there was specific: a beaded overlay is thousands of small objects held on by thread, and both normal cleaning methods damage it, since water and agitation break and tangle the thread, and solvent is worse because it can attack the thread finish or any adhesive and because any immersion bath tumbles the garment, which beads on thread cannot survive. That garment could not be cleaned at all. This one can be dry cleaned. So either the two garments are embellished very differently, or one of the two instructions is wrong. The most likely explanation is the first, and it is instructive: gold-tone accents suggests metal hardware, meaning rings, slides or caps attached at points, rather than thousands of beads sewn across a surface. Hardware of that kind is fixed at a few places, it is not held by long runs of thread, and it is not fragile in a solvent bath, so dry cleaning is entirely reasonable for it. That is the useful point. The word bead and the word accent describe two completely different manufacturing and cleaning situations, and they appear on the same garment. We would establish what is actually on it, how it is attached, and whether it is safe in solvent, because a garment described as beaded and labelled dry clean only is a garment where somebody may be about to lose their embellishment. It takes a minute to find out.

The waist is larger than the bust and the word gathered explains it, and that is the second thing, and this is now the third time we have met this shape of number. The published waist is 36 and the published bust is 30, and the model measures 34 and 24. We have seen a published circumference larger than the one above it twice before, and on each occasion the explanation was a different mechanism. On a shirt dress with a shirred skirt, the panel is gathered with elastic thread and the dimension you measure is the gathered one, which is the smallest the panel can be, not the largest, so a small number there was not a warning at all. On a bias cut gown, the bust was held at an elastic neckline and everything below was intended to fall free, so the waist was where the drape lived. This is the third, and the mechanism is printed in the name: gathered. Gathering means the cloth is more plentiful than the body at that point and is drawn up into folds, so the measurement describes how much cloth there is rather than what size of waist it will fit, and a 36 inch gathered waist will comfortably accommodate a 24 inch one because the surplus is the point. It is worth saying that all three mechanisms, shirring, bias and gathering, are ways of dealing with a range of body sizes, and they are alternatives to the two other ways we have seen, which are an adjustable tie and elastane in the cloth. Five approaches to the same problem. The practical point for a page is that a customer seeing 36 at the waist will assume the dress will be far too big for her, and the honest fix is to publish the figure and say what it means, which is one sentence.

This is the second silk halter tie with nothing behind it, and that is the third thing, and it is worth saying firmly because we have now said it four times and this is the second worst case. The caution is always the same: a knot holds by friction between its two ends, and silk is a very smooth, low friction surface, so a knot tied in silk works loose. We said it about a silk wrap dress, where the consequence was that the fronts would separate. We said it about a silk halter mini, and added that the consequence is worse on a halter because there the tie suspends the whole garment from the neck and if it loosens the neckline drops. Two garments ago we met the worst version, a silk maxi with an open back where the halter tie was the only fastening on the garment and there was no zip anywhere. This is the same as that one: a silk halter, a self tie, and no other closure stated. The tie is carrying the whole weight of a floor length silk dress, in the most slippery cloth there is, with nothing to catch it if it lets go. The fix is unchanged and it is very cheap: a small concealed hook or snap behind the tie, so the garment stays closed whether the knot holds or not, plus specifying that the tie be tied double. We would also test it by movement rather than standing still, because a knot that holds while posing may not hold while dancing. One last point on the lining: the shell is silk and the lining is viscose, which are two different fibres, and we have argued throughout that a lining should match its shell because otherwise the layers move differently. Here the dry clean instruction largely excuses it, since there is no water and nothing shrinks apart. But viscose is a heavier cloth than silk for the same weight of fabric, so a viscose lining under a silk shell will change how the skirt hangs, making it heavier and less fluid than the silk alone would be. Since this is only part lined, the effect is limited to where the lining is, which is worth checking so the hem falls evenly all the way round.
