The published size S gives a 29 inch bust, a 26 inch waist, a 32 inch hip and a 43 inch length against a model at roughly 32, 25 and 37. The hip is five inches under. Leather does not stretch to accommodate that, so either the measure is taken differently or the fit is very close indeed. We would measure this on a body and on more than one, because leather has no give to fall back on.

There are no reviews and no fit votes on this listing, so there is no score to quote. There is a property of leather that governs everything about this garment, a construction that is the hardest possible test of that property, and two decisions we would change.

Leather does not stretch, it relaxes, and that distinction decides how this garment fits and how it should be sold, and that is the first thing. Every other garment we have looked at works by stretching and recovering. A knit opens its loops and closes them again. A cloth with elastane in it extends and springs back. A bias cut cloth lets its yarns rotate. Leather does none of these things in any useful amount. Pull a hide and it gives very little, and what give there is does not come back. What leather does instead is relax permanently: it takes the shape of whatever it is pressed against and keeps it, which is why a leather shoe moulds to a foot and why a leather garment that feels too tight in a shop will feel different after an hour on the body. That has two consequences here, and both are about expectations rather than construction. The first is that a leather garment will feel tighter on first wearing than it will later, and a customer who judges it in the first minute will get the wrong answer. The second is that the change is one way: leather does not shrink back, so a leather garment that has relaxed past the point of fitting will not recover, and there is no washing or pressing that puts it back. So the size chart for a leather garment should say which state it refers to, because a measurement taken on a new hide and a measurement taken on a worn one are not the same garment. The published hip here is five inches under the model's own, which for leather is a great deal, and there is no stretch available to make it up. We would want to know whether that figure was taken on a hide at rest and how the garment behaves after an hour of wear, because those are the two numbers that matter and they are different.

A strapless garment is the hardest thing to make in leather, and this is the second thing, and it is worth setting out why because the reasoning applies to any strapless garment and leather simply removes the margin. The question that governs every strapless garment is what holds it up. There is nothing over the shoulders, so it can only grip. Across this series we have seen the answers: the tension of a ribbed knit, which works but relaxes because the knit has no elastane; a short length plus a little elastane, which helps because there is less weight below the grip; and an elastic set into the neckline, which we called the best answer because an elastic is a part with a measurable strength rather than a property that degrades. Leather cannot use any of them. It has no stretch, so there is no tension to grip with. It has no elastane. And while you could put an elastic in a channel at the top edge, leather is stiff and heavy and will not gather onto an elastic the way a cloth will, so the result would not sit right. That leaves the garment relying on being cut to exactly the right circumference, which is fine if the wearer's measurement is within a fraction of an inch of the pattern and useless if it is not. Too small and she cannot close the zip, and too large and the dress slides down, and with leather there is no middle ground where the material helps out. Complicating it further, leather is stiff, so it does not follow the body's curves the way a cloth does, and a stiff tube that does not make contact all the way round has less grip than one that does. Our recommendation is twofold. Put a silicone band inside the top edge, because it grips skin and does not depend on the leather touching anything, and be honest in the size guidance that there is no tolerance here, which means publishing measurements and advising on how leather changes with wear rather than giving a dress size.

Unlined leather against skin is the third thing, and it is the decision we would reverse. Leather does not breathe, and it is a skin, meaning it will take up moisture rather than letting it pass. A leather garment worn next to the skin in warm conditions, or for a long evening, will become uncomfortable in a way a cloth garment does not: it sticks, and it stays wet. Beyond the comfort, there is a real problem for the material itself. Leather that repeatedly takes up perspiration will stiffen and will discolour at the points of contact, usually under the arms and across the back, and that is not reversible. So an unlined leather dress is a garment that damages itself by being worn, which is a poor arrangement at this price. A lining solves all of it at once: it separates the hide from the skin, it takes up the moisture instead, it lets the garment slide on rather than having to be worked into, and it stops the hide from stiffening where it is worn. Almost every leather garment is lined and there is a reason. We would line this. The usual objection is that lining adds bulk to a garment bought for how sleek the leather is, and the answer is a thin, closely fitted lining rather than a heavy one. There is one further detail worth changing, which is the vent at the back. In a cloth garment a vent falls closed under its own weight, because cloth hangs. Leather is stiffer and lighter than it looks and will hold a shape rather than dropping into one, so a vent cut into leather tends to stand open rather than falling shut. A vent at the back is also the one place the wearer cannot see whether it is behaving. We would either move it to the side, where she can check it, or put a small concealed closure at the top of it so it can be held shut when she would rather it were.
