This is the same three mechanisms as the first knit we looked at, and that is the first thing, and it is a useful confirmation. A few garments ago we examined a strapless jersey gown and used it to draw a distinction we had been circling all series without quite naming: the gown had no elastane at all and yet its bust, waist and hip were all published smaller than the model, and the reason was that a knit gets its stretch from its structure rather than from its fibre, because a knit is made of interlocking loops and a loop can open. On that gown we said there were three separate things at work: the knit itself, ruching at the side, and a pull-on construction with no zip. This garment has all three of them. It is a jersey knit, it has ruching at the side, and it is a pull-on with no zip. So the argument we made there was not a special pleading for one garment, and it is worth saying what each of the three contributes, because they do different jobs. The knit provides give, so the garment can open over the body and close again. The ruching provides capacity, meaning there is spare cloth gathered up that can be drawn on where the body needs it, and it is also what gives the shaping across the middle. And the pull-on construction means there is no closure to fight, which is only possible because the other two are there. Remove the knit and a pull-on garment cannot get over the body. Remove the ruching and there is no capacity for different shapes. It is a coherent set of three and we would not change any part of it. What we would want is the one thing this page does not give, which is the fibre. The listing says jersey and says nothing about what it is made of, and that matters here as it does not on some garments, because a knit without any elastane recovers worse than one with it: it grows a little each time it is worn and it bags at the points that are worked hardest. A customer reading it will quite reasonably conclude that a machine on a delicate cycle is probably fine, and on many garments she would be right. The problem is that she has no way of knowing whether this is one of them, because the page does not tell her what the fibre is, and as we said above the fibre is exactly what decides whether a knit will felt, shrink or survive. So the weakest instruction here is attached to the garment with the least information about it. That is the wrong way round. We would state hand wash as an instruction, and we would publish the composition so the instruction makes sense. If the garment can in fact be machine washed on a delicate cycle, then say that instead, because it is better for the customer than a recommendation she will interpret loosely.

Two gaps on the page are the last thing, and they are the same kind of gap we have been tracking throughout. The first is the size chart. This listing publishes none, and as we have said repeatedly, a knit is the one category where the absence is most defensible, because a knit accommodates more shapes than a woven cloth does. But defensible is not the same as fine, because a customer who sees no chart assumes the page is incomplete rather than concluding the garment is forgiving. We have tracked production country on every garment in this series and the range has been wide. Here there is no country at all. There are benign explanations, the most likely being that a brand produces the same style in more than one place depending on the season, and a single label cannot name them all. But it does mean the customer cannot find out, and it also means the supply arrangement is not fixed, which is worth knowing if you are assessing a competitor rather than buying a dress. We would state the country, and if production genuinely moves, we would say that plainly rather than write a word that means nothing.
