There are no written reviews. This garment is worth writing about because it settles a question we raised a few garments ago and got only partly right. We argued that a care instruction on a knit dress was stricter than it needed to be, on the grounds that the fibre was mostly polyester and polyester washes easily. That was true as far as it went, but it was incomplete, and this garment shows what was missing. There is also a point about what a satin surface does to a light colour when there is no lining under it. The reference is the Addison Midi Dress by LPA in Light Blue. Production and Quality Control

There is one rating and two fit votes on this listing, and both need a caveat. There is also a care instruction here that corrects something we said a few garments ago, and it is worth correcting openly.

The fibre is not the only thing that decides how a garment can be washed, and this garment proves it, and that is the first thing. A few garments ago we looked at a maxi dress that was 71% polyester and 29% cotton in a knit, and it carried a dry clean only instruction. We criticised that, and the reasoning was about the fibre: polyester is one of the most washable fibres there is, it does not shrink, it does not felt, it tolerates warm water and it dries quickly, so requiring it to be dry cleaned imposes a real cost on the customer for no reason we could see. That reasoning was correct as far as it went, but it left something out, and this garment is the illustration. This is 100% polyester, so by the fibre argument alone it should be the most washable garment imaginable. And the instruction is hand wash or dry clean, which explicitly rules out machine washing. So something other than the fibre is deciding this, and it is the weave. Satin is made with long floats, meaning the yarns lie on the surface for a considerable distance before they interlace, and that is what produces the smooth, reflective face that a satin is bought for. It is also what makes it fragile in a machine: those long surface yarns abrade against the drum and against each other, and the abrasion leaves permanent pale marks along the rubbed areas, which cannot be pressed out because the surface has been physically damaged rather than merely creased. So a satin garment should not go in a machine even when the fibre in it would happily survive one. That is the missing half of the rule, and it is worth stating properly because we got it half right before: the care instruction is decided by the fibre and the construction together, and either one alone can be the reason. Here the instruction is correct and we would keep it. What we would add, since the customer cannot be expected to know this, is one line saying why, because otherwise hand wash on a polyester dress looks like an unnecessary restriction and people will ignore it.

A pale satin with no lining under it is the second thing, and it is a straightforward point that a photograph will not show. Satin is a surface built to reflect light, and a reflective surface does not hide what is underneath it in the way a matte cloth does. Two consequences follow. The first is opacity, which is obvious enough: a light blue satin with nothing beneath it will show more than a customer expects, particularly in daylight and particularly anything worn underneath it. The second is less obvious and more likely to annoy: a smooth, light catching surface will show the shape of anything pressed against it, so seams, edges and lines from underwear appear as shadows on the outside of the dress. Both are solved by a lining, and a lining in a satin slip dress is standard rather than optional, because it also lets the dress move over the body instead of catching on it. This garment is listed as unlined, which at this price is a decision rather than an oversight, probably to keep the dress light and to keep the cost down. We would offer a lining as an option and we would test the opacity of the unlined version in daylight before deciding what to say on the page. There is a third point about satin that belongs on the hangtag rather than the care label, which is that it creases in wear as well as in the wash. A satin dress creases where the wearer sits, and the creases are very visible on a surface that catches light. That is inherent to the cloth and not a defect, but it is worth knowing that a customer who buys a satin dress is buying something that needs pressing.

The rating and the votes are the last thing, and neither is usable, and it is worth saying why in both cases because the two fail in different ways. The rating is 5.0 from a single review, and that review is a rating submitted with no written comment. So it does not tell you that a customer liked the dress. It tells you that one person clicked five stars and wrote nothing. We saw the same thing on a jersey gown recently, where two reviews were both ratings with no comment and we said the 5.0 carried no information. The same applies here with one instead of two. The fit votes fail differently and more interestingly: there are two of them and they are split exactly evenly, half true to size and half large. A split sample is not a neutral result, and it is worth being careful here, because an even split looks like information and is not. With two votes, one in each direction, you have learned nothing about which way the garment runs. What you have learned, if anything, is that the answer is not consistent, and even that is a weak inference from two people. The useful general point is that a small sample is not merely imprecise, it can be actively misleading when it is displayed as a percentage, because 50% looks like a finding.
