This is the most expensive garment we have covered in this series and it carries the strictest care instruction we have seen, and those two facts are connected in a way that is worth setting out because it explains a lot about how garments like this are made. It is also the first garment in some time whose measurements are entirely comfortable, and the reason is a single number in the composition that we can now read against a range we have built up across many other garments. There are no reviews and no fit votes on this listing, so there is no score to quote. There is a care instruction that is the strictest we have met and which explains a great deal, and a fit that is entirely accounted for by one number.

Spot clean only is not a formality, it is the whole design constraint, and that is the first thing, and it is worth being clear about what it means in practice. We have examined a lot of care instructions in this series and argued that several are stricter than they need to be, which costs the customer money and inconvenience and costs the brand sales. This is not one of those. Spot clean only means what it says: you cannot wash it, you cannot dry clean it, and the only thing you can do is treat a mark locally. So on a garment at this price the owner has essentially no way to clean it, and any real soiling is a problem for a specialist rather than for a washing machine. Why so strict? Because of the beading. A beaded overlay is thousands of small objects held on by thread, and both of the normal methods of cleaning will damage it. Water and agitation break and tangle the threads and can dull or oxidise the beads themselves. Dry cleaning solvent is worse in a specific way, because it can attack the thread finish or any adhesive used, and because a solvent bath tumbles the garment, which is exactly what beads on thread cannot survive. So there is no safe way to immerse it, and spot cleaning is the honest answer. It is worth stating plainly on the page, though, because a customer spending this much has a right to know that the garment cannot be cleaned, and discovering it later is a complaint. There is a second consequence that is easy to miss and that explains the rest of the garment. If a garment can never be cleaned, then it never meets water, and if it never meets water then the two cloths in it never have to agree about shrinkage. The shell here is nylon and elastane and the contrast is silk, which is exactly the kind of pairing we flag elsewhere because the fibres move by different amounts. Here it does not matter, because nothing will ever shrink. So the strict care instruction is what makes this fibre combination possible at all. That is a real trade: the instruction buys freedom in how the garment is put together, and the customer pays for it in upkeep.

Eighteen per cent elastane explains the fit completely, and that is the second thing, and it is satisfying because this series has given us the whole range to read it against. The measurements are all slightly under the model's own, by about one inch at the bust, two at the waist and five at the hip, in a shell with no zip other than the one at the back. Across these garments we have seen 28% elastane on a silk dress, which we called genuine compression cloth. We have seen 19% on two lace garments, which comfortably explained their negative ease and where two separate listings gave the same size advice, corroborating each other. We have seen 5% and 4%, and we said plainly that a small elastane figure is not in the business of providing stretch at all, only of improving recovery, and that it would not by itself produce negative ease. Eighteen sits right next to the 19% that we accepted, and it is in a nylon mesh, which is a cloth that takes elastane well and returns well. So this fit is fully accounted for, and there is nothing here we would want to change about the measurements. It is worth stating the general rule we have been building towards, which is that the elastane figure tells you what a garment can do: below roughly 10% it is a recovery additive, and above roughly 15% it is a mechanism you can design negative ease around.

Elastane ages and beads are heavy, and that is the caution, and it is the one thing we would want tested before sampling. Everything good about the fit above comes from the elastane in the mesh, and elastane has a finite life: it loses power over time, faster with heat, with agitation and with chlorine, and it never comes back. Now consider what this garment asks of that elastane. There is a draped beaded overlay on it, and beads are heavy, considerably heavier than the cloth they sit on, and all of that weight is hanging on the mesh and pulling downward every time the garment is worn and every time it is hung up. So you have a component that is slowly losing its strength carrying a load that never comes off it. The result over a season is that the garment grows: the fit that was accounted for stops being accounted for, and the beads begin to hang lower than they were designed to. The way to deal with it is to stop asking the elastane to carry the beads. The usual answer is to give the beading its own support, meaning a base layer or a tape that takes the weight, so the stretchy mesh does the fitting and something inextensible does the carrying. That is worth specifying at sampling, because it is difficult to add later. There is one further point in the garment's favour that is worth noting, which is the choice of a heavyweight mesh rather than a light one. A beaded overlay needs a base cloth with enough strength to take the thread and enough body not to sag between the beads, and a lightweight mesh would fail at both. Heavyweight mesh is the right specification, and it is the kind of choice that does not show in a photograph but decides whether the garment survives.
