The bust and waist are the same figure, which means there is no waist suppression at all, and the waist has a great deal of ease against the model. That is a deliberate straight shape rather than a fitted one.

One hook at the back, with nothing else, is the first thing, and it is more exposed than the version of this we criticised recently. On a jersey gown a few garments ago we took issue with a hook and eye at the back, on the grounds that a fitting which must be lined up by feel, out of sight, behind the wearer, will defeat people. But that garment had a zip as well. The hook there was doing a real job, which is taking the strain off the zip teeth at the point where a zip is most likely to fail, and if the hook defeated her, the zip was still there. Here the listing describes one hook closure at the back and mentions no zip, no second hook and nothing else. So this hook is not sharing the load with anything, it is carrying all of it. That changes the situation from an inconvenience into a risk, for two reasons. The first is that a hook and eye is a fitting that comes undone under tension: it is held by a small bend of wire in a small loop, and a garment pulling against it will eventually find the way out. The second is that it is a single point of failure, meaning there is no backup. If it lets go there is nothing holding the dress closed. We would not ship this arrangement. The cheapest fix is a second hook a little below the first, which shares the load and means one coming undone is not catastrophic, and the better fix is a short concealed zip with the hook kept for appearance, since a zip cannot come undone under tension the way a hook can. Either costs very little at the sampling stage. There is also the reachability question, which is the one we raised before and which still applies: anything at the centre of the back has to be done by feel. A side opening, or a zip that runs to the side seam, is both easier to reach and easier to see, and on a garment filed under cut-out dresses the back is the point of the design, so a closure down its centre interrupts the thing being sold.

The bust and the waist are the same number and that tells you the shape, and that is the second thing, and we have now seen it twice in very different garments. The published size small gives 36 at the bust and 36 at the waist, against a model at 34 and 23. So the bust has a couple of inches of ease and the waist has well over a foot of it. That is not a data error, and the reason is visible in the number itself: a garment whose bust and waist measure the same has no waist suppression. The cloth goes down from the chest to the hip without coming in, which is a straight or column shape, sometimes called a shift, and it is a deliberate and very common choice. What makes it worth pointing out is that this is the second time in two groups we have met a published bust equal to a published waist, and the other garment could hardly have been more different. That one was a strapless tube mini with both measurements at 19 inches, far below the model, where the equality told us the garment was an unshaped tube and the smallness told us the figure was probably a flat half measurement. Here the equality tells us the same thing about the shape, that it is straight, and the size of the number tells us something else again, that the fit is generous. So the same arithmetic fact in two places means the same thing about the cut and completely different things about the fit. The practical consequence for a customer is worth stating on the page, because it is not obvious from a photograph: a dress with this much ease at the waist will not look fitted, and anyone expecting a shaped waist will be surprised. That is not a fault, but it is the kind of thing that produces returns when a customer's expectation was set by how the garment looked on a tall model.

One last point on the composition and the care. The shell is 75% rayon with 25% polyester and the lining is 98% polyester with 2% elastane, so the two layers are not the same cloth, and we have argued throughout that a lining should match the fibre of its shell because otherwise the layers move differently over time. Rayon is the one to watch here, because it loses a large part of its strength when it is wet, so it is at its most fragile in water and will distort under its own weight if handled carelessly. The dry clean only instruction avoids that entirely, since there is no water involved, so the mismatch is largely excused and we would keep the instruction rather than soften it. There is one consequence worth noting, though. A fully lined lightweight satin, in a pale colour, with a lining that is almost entirely polyester, will behave as a heavier and less breathable garment than the description suggests. Polyester does not absorb moisture, so on a long sleeve dress worn to a party the lining is the layer against the skin and it will not help.
