We do not believe the 19 inch bust, and saying so is more useful than explaining it away, and that is the first thing. The listing publishes 19 inches at the bust and 19 inches at the waist for a size small worn by a model measuring 34, 24 and 34. Two things are wrong with that. First, the bust and the waist are given as the same number, which a garment with any shaping at all cannot be, though it is exactly what you would expect from a strapless tube with no waist suppression, which is what a bustier is, so that part at least is coherent. Second, 19 inches is around half the model's own bust measurement, and this is described as a heavyweight knit with 3% elastane and no zip. A heavyweight knit is made to have body, and a closely knit cloth stretches less than an open one, not more. Asking a pull-on tube to open from 19 inches to pass over a 34 inch bust and then recover is asking for close to eighty per cent stretch and full recovery from 3% elastane, which no heavyweight knit does. So what is going on? The most likely answer is the mundane one: the figure is a flat half measurement, meaning the garment was laid down and measured across rather than around, in which case the true circumference is about 38 inches, which sits perfectly against the model and against the 38 inch hip also published. We cannot prove that from the page, and we are not going to pretend to. But this is worth dwelling on because it is the clearest example yet of a principle we have applied quietly throughout this series and should now state outright: a number on a retail page is a claim, not a measurement. Across these garments we have used published figures to reason about fit, and we have always done it by asking what mechanism on the garment would produce that number. Here there is no mechanism that produces 19, and the honest conclusion is that the figure is probably wrong. The practical consequence is simple and it is what we do anyway: we measure a sample ourselves. Nothing based on this figure would go into a pattern.

Metallic yarn is not textile yarn, and 5% of it in an unlined strapless garment is a comfort problem, and that is the second thing. Metallic fibre is made by slitting or wrapping a metal film, sometimes laminated to a carrier, and it behaves nothing like the fibres it is spun with. It does not absorb moisture, it does not soften with washing, and it is considerably less flexible than a textile yarn, so the ends of it stand proud of the cloth surface. Now think about where this garment sits. It is strapless, it is unlined, and it is a pull-on tube that has to grip the body to stay up, which means it is in contact with skin across the whole torso and under the arms, held there under tension. Five per cent metallic fibre in a cloth pressed against the skin like that will be felt, and on a warm evening with any movement it will itch. This is the sort of thing nobody discovers from a photograph and everybody discovers an hour into a party. There are two answers and we would take the second. You can line it, which solves the comfort at once and costs a lining, or you can use a metallic yarn that is engineered for next to skin wear, which usually means a finer filament fully wrapped in a soft carrier rather than an exposed film. We would test this on skin rather than on a hanger, because the fault does not show up any other way. The same fibre also dictates the care, and the instruction here is hand wash or dry clean, which is right but incomplete. Metallic yarn is abraded by agitation, it can be dulled or discoloured by detergent and by heat, and it cannot be ironed hot because the film will soften or the colour will shift. So the label should say cool, say no wringing, and say iron on the reverse at a low setting or not at all. Those three lines are the difference between a metallic garment that lasts and one that goes grey after two washes.

Short makes strapless much safer, and this is the last thing, and it is the point where this garment answers a question better than a much more expensive one did. In the previous group we looked at a strapless floor length gown and asked the question that governs every strapless garment, which is what holds it up. With nothing over the shoulders, it can only grip the body, either through structure such as boning or a silicone band, or through the tension of the cloth. That gown had no structure and relied on the tension of a ribbed knit, and we pointed out that its length worked against it: 70 inches of cloth hanging below the grip is weight pulling downward on the one place holding everything up, and without elastane the grip relaxes rather than recovering. This garment is shorter than that one by forty inches. That changes the whole calculation, because there is much less weight below the grip, and it has 3% elastane where that one had none, so it will recover better. So the same construction is far safer at 30 inches than at 70. That is worth stating as a rule, because it is the kind of thing that decides whether a design needs engineering at all: on a strapless garment, length is a structural variable, not just a style one. We would still put a silicone band along the top edge, because it is cheap and it converts the whole question from one about cloth tension into one about grip, and we would test it by movement rather than by standing still.
