Most will not, and the ones who do will not be certain what it means for them in practice: does it need a slip, will underwear show, and in which light. We have argued throughout this series that saying a garment is sheer costs nothing on the page and prevents the returns that follow when a customer discovers it herself, and we have held up one listing as the best example we have seen because it said the garment was transparent, said underwear would show, and then added that underwear was not included. On 100% silk that is a dangerous thing to leave open. Silk takes badly to water: it can shrink, it can lose its lustre, it can develop water marks that do not come out, and the finishes that give it its hand are water soluble. So a customer who reads dry cleanable and decides to hand wash this gown is taking a real risk with a 1,333 dollar garment, and she was not warned. We would pick one deliberately. If the shell and lining combination has been tested and survives careful hand washing, say so and give the method. If it has not, say dry clean only, which is unambiguous and which nobody misreads. An adjustable strap is the right answer to one shoulder, and it is worth saying why, and that is the third thing. A one shoulder garment has a single strap carrying the whole neckline, and the difficulty with it is that shoulders are not standard: the slope from neck to shoulder point varies a good deal between people, and so does where the strap wants to sit. A fixed strap that is right on one body will slide off another or dig into a third, and there is no way to cut one length that suits everyone. There is one caution, which is that hardware on silk needs thought. A slider or a ring is a small metal fitting sitting on a 100% silk strap, and it concentrates the load of the garment onto a few millimetres of cloth. Silk is strong for its weight but it is not forgiving of a hard edge bearing on it, so the strap will wear at that point and may eventually tear there. We would specify a smooth, rounded fitting with no sharp edge, and a reinforcement behind it so the load spreads over the strap rather than sitting on a line. On the fit more generally: the bust, waist and hip are all published under the model's own measurements, in a silk with no elastane. A side zip helps, and if this gown is cut on the bias then that would explain a great deal, because a bias cut cloth has real give in it and drapes by clinging, which is exactly what this kind of gown wants. But the page does not say it is bias cut, and that is the third thing this listing assumes rather than states. It is worth asking, because the answer changes how you develop it: a bias cut gown needs to be cut and hung before hemming, since it will settle, and it uses considerably more cloth than one cut on the straight grain.
