A button and loop at the back of the neck is the first thing, and it is worth being concrete about why it is a problem. A halter anchors at the back of the neck, so that is where the fastening has to go, and this one is a button and a loop. Now think about what that asks of the wearer. It is behind her head, she cannot see it, and it is a small fastening that has to be lined up by feel. She will need either a mirror and patience or another person, every single time she puts the dress on. Then there is the second problem, which is the one customers actually complain about: hair. A small metal button sitting at the nape under her own hair will catch it, and it will catch it on the way out as well as on the way in. On the second, and this is the part that catches people out, they respond differently to the same cleaning process: a solvent that is fine for polyester can dull or spot silk, and the two will not necessarily come back looking the same. The place this shows is the seam. If the two cloths are joined edge to edge and one moves more than the other, the seam puckers or the hem line goes uneven. It is worth saying that this is not a reason to avoid the combination, because mixing a silk trim into a polyester body is a very common and sensible way to get the look of silk at a lower cost. It is a reason to test the joined pair rather than each cloth on its own, and to specify which cloth goes where rather than leaving it to the factory.

A 26 inch bust and an open back are the last two things, and they are connected. The bust is eight inches under the model's own, and while crepe has a little give in it, that is a large figure for a cloth with no elastane in it, so we would measure a sample on a body rather than publish the flat number.
