Machine washable, at this price, is the first thing, and the comparison that makes it matter is sitting one group back. There we covered a viscose maxi dress priced at 140 dollars, almost exactly the same money as this, which was dry clean only. That instruction was defensible on its fibre, because viscose loses about half its strength when wet and distorts in water. But we pointed out what it costs the customer: a dry clean is a meaningful fraction of what that dress cost, so after ten cleans she has spent roughly what she paid for it, and the behavioural consequence is that a garment which is expensive to maintain gets worn less. Now look at this one. It is 95% polyester, which is a fibre that tolerates water, shrinking and agitation without complaint, and the instruction is machine wash cold.
