GOTS certified is the second thing, and it is worth explaining why that particular wording matters. Earlier in this series we covered a dress described as organic cotton, and we flagged there that organic is a regulated claim rather than a description, and that putting it on a hangtag requires documentation behind it. This listing does not merely say organic: it names the standard, GOTS, which stands for the Global Organic Textile Standard. The difference is substantial. A claim about fibre only concerns how the cotton was grown. GOTS covers the processing as well, which means the ginning, spinning, dyeing and finishing all have to meet the standard, and it carries social criteria alongside the environmental ones. It also requires documentation at each stage of the chain, which is what actually makes it enforceable.
