This garment gets several separate things right that we have argued for one at a time across this series, and it is worth gathering them, because it is easier to see why each one matters when they are all in one place.

Pull-on with elastane, and a relaxed shape, are the first two, and they are related. On the first: we have now looked at a good number of pull-on garments in this series, and the pattern is consistent. A garment with no opening has to pass over the head, the bust and the hips, and if the cloth has no stretch then the cut alone has to provide all the room, which forces the whole silhouette looser than it was probably designed to be. Here there is 5% elastane, which is enough for the jersey to open and come back, so the garment can be pulled on without the pattern having to be distorted to allow it. On the second: this is a relaxed fit, and earlier in this series we compared a loose blouson dress, where all ten fit votes said true to size, with a close fitting gown whose ninety-six votes scattered three ways. The conclusion was that a loose shape only has to be large enough, while a close one has to be right at every measurement at once, and that the scattered verdict was a property of the shape and not of the grading. This garment is on the right side of that, and we would keep the ease rather than tighten it in pursuit of a closer fit. The measurements agree: thirteen inches of ease at the waist is the shift doing what a shift does, which is hanging from the shoulders rather than following the waist.

Cotton, and a care instruction that matches it, are the third. Cotton breathes, which on a jersey dress worn in warm weather is the whole point, and the 5% elastane is doing the quiet job of letting the garment recover rather than bag out, which is the failure mode of any close fitting knit with no elastane in it. Hand wash cold is consistent with both: cotton shrinks less in cold water, and heat is what damages elastane, so a cold instruction protects the thing that makes the garment work. This is worth noting, because we have spent a great deal of this series finding care instructions that contradict the garment they are printed on, and this one does not. There is also no lining, which on a warm weather cotton dress is the right call rather than a saving, since a lining would undo the breathability the cotton was chosen for.

Ivory and unlined with nothing said about it is the fourth thing, and it is the one change we would make. This is an ivory colourway with no lining, and the listing says nothing about what that means. In this same group there is another dress whose listing states outright that the fabric is semi sheer and that underwear will be visible through it, and we praised that, because saying it costs nothing on the page and not saying it produces returns from customers who find out for themselves. There is a detail here that makes it slightly more interesting than the usual case. This is a printed cloth, and print does add a little opacity, because there is pigment sitting on the surface of the fabric. So a customer might reasonably assume the dots make it fine.
