Three impossible numbers that describe a shape perfectly is the first thing, and it is the useful half of a skill we have had to use repeatedly in this series. The bust is six inches under the model's own, and the waist and hip are sixteen and eighteen inches over. Taken as measurements of a person, those cannot all be true of anyone. Taken as measurements of a puff dress, they are precisely what you would expect, and here is why. A puff shape works by fitting closely at the top and then allowing the cloth to stand away from the body below, with the hem drawn back in underneath to create the volume. So the circumference has to increase sharply as you move down the garment, which is exactly the progression from 28 to 40 to 52, and the short 25 inch length concentrates that volume into a small space, which is what makes it read as a puff rather than as a flare. We have spent much of this series going the other way: a dress published at an 18 inch bust with no elastane, no opening and no pleats, which we discarded as impossible, and another at 24 inches where the pleating was the mechanism that made it work. So the method is worth stating explicitly, because it works in both directions. When a measurement looks wrong, ask what on the garment would produce it, and if the answer is the shape, the number is probably right.

Crystal on a shoulder strap is the second thing, and it is the change we would argue for. A shoulder strap on a dress like this is not decorative. Along with the back zip and the fit of the bodice, it is one of the things holding the garment up, and it carries that load at one of the narrowest points on the whole garment, across the top of the shoulder where there is bone close under the skin. Now put crystal on it. Crystal is heavier than sequin by a good margin, so you are adding weight to the exact component that is already carrying load. Crystal is also hard and it is set in metal, so it sits as a series of small rigid points against the shoulder, and over an evening that is felt as pressure and then as soreness. There are two ways to have the look without the cost of it: put a soft facing on the underside of the strap so the crystals touch only the outside, or stop the embellishment short of the strap and put it on the bodice instead. There is also a care question that follows from the same point, and it is the same one we raised on a rhinestone dress elsewhere in this group. Crystal is either claw set or held by heat activated adhesive, and dry cleaning is not neutral to either: the tumbling knocks stones against each other and abrades them, and solvent is precisely what attacks an adhesive bond. Dry clean only may well be the right instruction for the heavyweight crepe, but it is a risky one for the stones, and the answer depends on how they are fixed. That has to be established at sampling.

Heavyweight fabric is the right choice for a puff, and the third thing, and it is worth saying why because the comparison is available inside this series. A puff shape stands away from the body, which means the cloth has to hold a shape that nothing underneath is supporting. A lightweight cloth cannot do that. It collapses, and what you get is a limp hem rather than a puff, and it collapses worse as the evening goes on and the fabric warms and relaxes. A heavyweight cloth has enough body to stand on its own, which is what makes the silhouette read. We covered another puff dress earlier in this series that was made in a lightweight jersey, and that is precisely the combination that will not hold, and we flagged the hem travelling upward when seated as a predictable consequence. We would keep the weight and we would still test the hem seated, because a puff hem rides up when the wearer sits regardless of how well the cloth holds, and how far it travels is something you choose when you decide how much the hem is drawn in.
