Shell and lining in the same fibre is the first thing, and this listing gets it half right in an instructive way. It states the composition of both layers, and both are polyester, and we have argued throughout this series that a lining should match the fibre of its shell, because fibres shrink by different amounts and layers that shrink differently stop sitting flat inside each other. So on that test this passes, and it passes in a way a good many listings do not, since most say only that a garment is lined and never say what with. But it is worth being precise about what matching the fibre does and does not buy you, and the clearest way to do that is to put the four cases we have now collected side by side. A silk dress lined in polyester fails both tests: the layers shrink differently and the polyester cancels the breathability that justified buying silk. A cotton dress lined in cotton passes both: the layers move together and the garment breathes. A silk gown lined in silk passes both, and at its price that is the only defensible choice. And this one, polyester on polyester, passes the first test and fails the second. The layers will agree with each other through cleaning, which is real. But neither layer breathes, and on a close fitting party dress worn for hours that is felt. So the lesson is slightly more specific than match the fibre: matching the fibre solves the dimensional problem. It does not solve the comfort problem, and those are separate decisions.

Bodycon, pull-on and no elastane is the second thing, and it is the hardest version of a problem we have now seen several times in this series. In an earlier group we had three pull-on dresses side by side, at zero, four and twenty-eight per cent elastane, and the pattern was clear: at zero the garment has to be cut loose enough to pass over the body, at twenty-eight the cloth does the work, and at four you are in between and have to test. This garment is at zero, and worse, it is a bodycon, which is a shape that is supposed to follow the body closely. So the same garment is being asked to be large enough to go over the bust and the hips without an opening, and small enough to cling once it is on. Those are contradictory requirements and no amount of adjusting the grade will satisfy both. This is the most extreme version of that conflict we have seen, and we would not attempt to cut our way out of it. There are two honest answers: put elastane in the cloth so it can do both jobs, or put a zip in so the garment does not have to pass over the body at all. We would do the second, because a zip costs less than a better cloth and it does not change the look.

Rhinestones are not sequins, and the care instruction depends on how they are attached, which is the third thing. A sequin is sewn on with thread. A rhinestone is usually held one of two ways: either in a metal claw setting that grips the stone, or by a heat activated adhesive on the back of the stone. The two behave completely differently, and the listing does not say which this is. If they are claw set, the risk is mechanical: claws open, stones drop out, and the metal can tarnish. If they are heat fixed, the risk is chemical: the adhesive softens with heat and can be attacked by solvent, and warm water and rubbing will both shorten its life. Now look at the care instruction, hand wash cold. Cold is the right temperature for an adhesive, so on that reading it is a defensible choice. But hand washing means rubbing, and rubbing works stones loose whichever way they are fixed. We think it is a bold instruction for a fully embellished garment, and we would not print it until the fixing method is known. This is the same question we raised on a glass and brass trimmed dress earlier in this series, and on a fully sequined dress where the manufacturer answered it correctly by specifying spot clean only. Ask the question at sampling, because you cannot fix the answer later.

A halter with a cowl and a low back is the last thing. A cowl neckline works by having surplus fabric that falls into folds, which means a cowl needs ease to exist at all, and on a halter every gram of that surplus is carried at the back of the neck rather than spread across the shoulders. Add the weight of the stones, which sit on the same fabric, and the load at the neck is not trivial. We would test this on a body over time rather than judge it in a fitting, because neck load is something the wearer feels after an hour rather than after a minute. On the low back, one practical point worth putting on your own page: a low back rules out a normal bra, and customers need to know that before they buy rather than after.
