The third is a closure decision we would want to change, because a row of hooks and eyes on the side of a compression garment is the weakest available answer to a real load. It is also worth noting where this is made, because India is not an arbitrary choice for a garment like this and the reason is worth knowing. The published size S gives a 27 inch bust, a 24 inch waist and a 32 inch hip against a model at roughly 34, 24 and 34. The bust is seven inches under her own, which on most garments would be unwearable, but here the detachable lining is 85% nylon with 15% elastane, which is a compression cloth with real power in it. That is the mechanism, and it is the same one another dress from this brand used earlier in this series. We would still confirm the worn circumference on a body before publishing.

Production and Quality Control

There are no reviews and no fit votes on this listing, so there is no score to quote. It is the most complicated fabric construction in this series so far, and there are three decisions in it worth examining.

Three cloths with three different elastane percentages is the first thing, and it is the most complexity we have dealt with in one garment. The shell is 90% polyamide with 10% elastane. The second fabric is 95% silk with 5% elastane. The lining is 85% nylon with 15% elastane. So there are three stretch levels in one garment: ten, five and fifteen per cent. That means the three layers recover at different rates, and recovery is exactly what governs whether layers sit together or fight each other. The lining, at 15%, wants to spring back harder than the shell at 10%, and both want to spring back harder than the silk at 5%. Every time the wearer moves, those three layers are pulling against each other by slightly different amounts. It also means three shrink behaviours, and one of them is silk, which behaves differently again from the two synthetics. None of this makes the garment unmakeable, and at this price some complexity is expected, but it does mean this cannot be specified on paper. Each pairing needs its own test, and the garment needs to be washed or cleaned and then examined as a whole, because the layers will tell you whether they agree only once they have been through it. There is a cost consequence too, which is that three cloths means three minimum orders and three lots of waste, and that is a real part of why this garment costs what it does.

A detachable lining is the second thing, and we think it is a genuinely good idea with a real cost attached. Sequins have a rough side. The thread holding them and the backs of the discs sit against the skin, and on a slip dress, which is worn close and with little underneath, that is felt constantly. A lining solves it, and making the lining detachable solves two further things at once: the customer can remove it if she wants the dress to be sheerer or cooler, and she can clean the lining separately, which on a dry clean only sequined garment is worth something. So it is a well thought out piece of design and we would consider it for any heavily embellished close fitting style. Now the cost, and it is not a flaw so much as something to handle. A detachable lining has to attach somewhere, and every attachment point is a place where the lining pulls on the shell, and those points sit on a garment that is already fitting closely. They need to be engineered rather than added. And there is a practical one: a piece that comes out is a piece that gets lost, which means either you supply a spare or you accept that some customers will end up with half a garment. We would specify the attachment properly and think about whether a spare is worth including.

Hooks and eyes on the side of a compression garment is the third thing, and it is the change we would argue for. The published bust is 27 inches against a model at 34, so this garment is under real compression when worn, which means the closure is under continuous tension for as long as it is on the body. A row of hooks and eyes is the weakest way to hold that. Each hook carries its own share of the load, they are fastened one at a time, and the load is not shared evenly between them, so the ones nearest the greatest strain take the most and are the ones that open. We said something similar about a back zip on a close fitting bodice earlier in this series, and made the same recommendation, which is that a closure under continuous tension is not really a closure, it is a structural component, and it should be specified as one. Here we would put a short concealed zip in alongside the hooks and let the zip carry the load while the hooks sit flat and do the finishing. It costs very little and it removes the single most likely reason for this garment to fail while it is being worn.

Made in India is the last thing, and it is worth a sentence because it is not an arbitrary choice. India has a deep and long standing industry in hand embellishment: sequins, beads, embroidery, and the kind of hand finishing that a fully sequined garment needs and that machines do not do as well. A garment like this one, at this price, being made there is entirely consistent with what it is. The practical consequence for you is about lead time and about sampling, because hand embellishment does not scale the way cut and sew does: doubling an order does not halve the time per piece, and a heavily embellished sample takes considerably longer to produce than a plain one.
