We criticised a silk chiffon romper for being lined in polyester, and gave two reasons: the two fibres shrink by different amounts, so the layers stop agreeing with each other after any wet process, and a polyester lining sits between the silk and the skin, which means the wearer pays for silk and receives none of the breathability that justified buying it. We praised a cotton dress for being lined in cotton, because there the two layers move together and the garment can be cleaned as one thing. This gown does the silk version of that, and at this price it is the only defensible choice, because a customer spending this much on a silk gown is buying a specific set of properties and a polyester lining would quietly remove one of them. The rule underneath all three cases is one sentence: match the lining fibre to the shell fibre, and where you cannot, know what you have given up.
