A faux leather belt against a dry clean instruction is the first thing, and it is not a small point. Faux leather is a plastic coating, usually polyurethane, applied over a fabric base. Dry cleaning works by immersing a garment in solvent, and solvent is good at attacking that coating: it pulls out the plasticiser that keeps the coating flexible, and once that happens the surface goes stiff, then cracks, then peels, and in bad cases turns tacky. So the process written on this garment is the process most likely to destroy its belt. It matters more than a belt normally would, because this is a pull-on dress with no waist seam and no shaping in the body of it, which means the belt is the only thing defining the waist. Take the belt away and the dress has no shape at all. This is the fourth instance of the same class of problem we have now logged: a metallic fibre garment instructed to be dry cleaned, a flocked garment instructed to be dry cleaned only, a glass and brass trimmed garment instructed to be dry cleaned only, and now a polyurethane trimmed garment instructed to be dry cleaned. Four different components, four different failure modes, one cause in common, which is that the care instruction was decided by looking at the shell fabric and never checked against the trim. The rule we draw from it is simple and worth adopting: a care instruction validated only against the shell is not a care instruction. It has to be checked against every component on the garment, including the ones nobody thinks about.

Faux leather has a shelf life, and that is the second thing, and it is separate from the solvent problem. Polyurethane degrades on its own through hydrolysis, which is a slow reaction with moisture in the air. It does not need anyone to wash the garment. A faux leather belt can stiffen and peel while it is hanging in a warehouse or sitting in a customer's wardrobe, and the usual window before this becomes visible is somewhere between one and three years depending on the coating and the climate it is stored in. That has a commercial consequence worth stating plainly: a garment with a faux leather component has a shorter sellable life than the same garment without one, and in a humid market that window is shorter still. If this dress is for a market with high humidity, we would rather you knew that now. The alternatives are a split or a bonded leather, which costs more and lasts far longer, or a belt in a woven or a knit that sidesteps the question entirely.

Pull-on with no stretch, the boat neck and the satin are the third. The cloth is 100% viscose with no elastane, and it is pulled on, which means the whole garment has to pass over the head, the bust and the hips while having essentially no give in it. That does not mean it cannot be done, it means the cut has to carry it: the grade needs real ease through the bust and the hip, and we would confirm it on a fit model rather than trust the block. The boat neck makes this slightly more demanding rather than less, because a boat neck sits close to the base of the neck and wide across the collarbone, so there is little in the neckline that helps, and once the dress is on, a boat neck with no stretch in the cloth restricts how far the arms can go up before the whole bodice starts to lift. We would test arms raised, not just arms down. On the satin: a lightweight satin is a cloth with long floats on the surface, which is what gives it its shine, and long floats snag.
