There is a number here that looks impossible and turns out to be the clearest illustration of what pleating does that we have had in this series. The published bust on a size 2 is 24 inches against a model with a 34 inch bust, which is ten inches of negative ease, and the shell is 100% polyester with no stretch fibre in it at all. On a flat cloth that garment could not be put on. It works because it is pleated, and pleating is precisely a way of storing extra fabric in a small space: the cloth is folded back on itself, so it measures small lying flat and opens out substantially when worn. It is worth comparing this with another garment we covered recently, a silk dress with a similar negative ease that is pulled on with no opening and no stretch. There the number was a real problem, because nothing about that dress allowed it to open. The published size 2 gives a 24 inch bust, a 26 inch waist and a 30 inch hip against a model at roughly 34, 24 and 34. The bust is therefore ten inches under her own, and this is the point worth understanding rather than correcting: the garment is pleated, and pleats are folded cloth, so the flat measurement is small and the worn measurement is much larger. We would publish the worn circumference as well as the flat one, because a customer reading 24 inches will assume the dress cannot fit her and will not buy it.

There are no customer reviews on this listing and no fit votes either, so there is no score to quote and no feedback to read. What there is, is a measurement that looks impossible and which explains itself once you understand the pleating, and a lining choice we would want to question.

A 24 inch bust is the first thing, and it is the best illustration of pleating we have had in this series. The shell is 100% polyester with no elastane, so there is no stretch in it whatsoever, and a garment measuring 24 inches at the bust cannot go onto a body measuring 34 inches. Except that it can, because it is pleated. Pleating works by folding cloth back on itself and setting the fold, and what that buys you is that a great deal of fabric occupies a small flat space. Measure the garment lying on a table and you get 24 inches. Put it on and the folds open, and the circumference they can cover is much larger. So the negative ease here is not tightness, it is storage. It is worth putting this next to another garment we covered recently in this series, a silk dress published at a 27 inch bust that is pulled on with no zip and no stretch fibre. That number was a genuine problem, because nothing on that dress permitted it to open. Here, the pleats are exactly the thing that permits it. Same shape of number, opposite verdict, and the difference is entirely whether the garment has a mechanism for opening.

The stretch lining against heat set pleats is the second thing, and it is the change we would argue for. The pleats in a polyester cloth are set with heat, and once set they hold. The lining specified here contains 5% elastane, which means the lining is stretchy, and a stretchy lining sits directly behind pleats that are not. Every time the wearer moves, the lining stretches and pulls against the back of the pleats, and over enough wear that is exactly how crisp pleats become soft ones. We raised the same point on a pleated maxi earlier in this series, and it applies with the same force here. We would use a non stretch lining and hang it so it moves independently rather than being stitched into each pleat. This is a small change in the tech pack and it is the difference between a dress that looks sharp after ten wears and one that looks tired after two.

Hand wash cold, the ruffle and the polyester are the third. Hand wash cold is stated, and it is the right instruction and a genuinely useful one at this price: polyester pleats are heat set, so cold water will not unset them, and hand washing avoids the tumbling that crushes pleats and ruffles. We would keep it and we would say on the page that the pleats should not be pressed, because a customer who irons pleats will flatten them and there is no way back. On the ruffle, structured means it is meant to stand away from the body, and polyester is the right fibre for that because it holds a set shape; the thing to specify is how the structure is achieved, whether by interfacing, by a wired or a rolled edge, or by the cut alone, because that decides whether the ruffle survives washing and packing flat. On the back zip: it runs through pleats, and a zip set into pleated cloth needs the pleats either side of it to be secured first, or the teeth will pull the folds out of alignment and the line will look crooked.
