12 inches of negative ease is the first thing, and it is real rather than a mistake. Size S is published at a 22 inch bust. Three things allow that, and they all have to be present. The shell is a jersey, which is a knit and therefore extends in a way a woven never will. It has 4% elastane, which is what brings it back. And then there is the lining, at 85% nylon and 15% elastane. That last figure is the interesting one. Most linings run 5 to 10% elastane, enough to move with the body. 15% is a different intent: a lining with that much elastane is not just covering the inside of the dress, it is compressing the body. This is shapewear built into a gown. That is a legitimate and quite elegant way to do it, and it is worth naming for what it is, because if you describe it as a dress with a lining nobody will understand why the measurements are what they are.

It is worth comparing this with a different approach we covered earlier in this series, because the two solve the same problem in opposite ways. Another dress in this series used a built-in bodysuit with snap fastenings to hold the wearer in. That is a structural solution: it holds through construction, and it works as long as the snaps hold. This one is an elastic solution: it holds through compression, and it works as long as the elastane does. Both are honest, and they fail differently. The snaps are the weak point on one. On this one, the weak point is time, which brings us to the next thing.

Elastane fatigue is the third thing, and it is the real risk here, because the compression is what the customer is buying and it is the part that will change. Elastane loses power with repeated stretching, with heat and with age, and it loses it faster the harder it is worked. Here it is being worked hard: the garment is worn permanently under tension, well below the body's own measurements, so the elastane is never resting. The honest expectation is that this dress will not compress the way it did on day one, indefinitely. We would test recovery after repeated wear and cleaning rather than judge from a first fitting, and we would be careful about heat at every stage, since heat is what kills elastane fastest. The care instruction is dry clean only, which protects the rayon, but the solvent is not neutral to elastane either, so the garment has two materials wanting different things and neither option is free.
